Background
Andrea L. Dixon received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education, specializing in School Counseling, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2002. She earned her M.A in School Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and her B.A. in English and Communications from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is a certified School Guidance Counselor in Florida and Arizona, a Licensed Associate Counselor in the state of Arizona, and a National Certified Counselor. Dr. Dixon was an assistant professor and the school counseling program track coordinator at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, from 2002-2006. She is now an assistant professor in the Department of Counselor Education at the University of Florida. Dr. Dixon worked as an elementary and high school counselor in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in Charlotte, NC. She has also worked as a counselor in the private practice and university counseling center settings. She enjoys collaborative research and teaching activities, including professional development experiences for students in research, writing, and presentation teams, and in cross-cultural research with colleagues across the country. She is currently involved in validating and furthering the construct of “mattering to others” as a tool within the counseling relationship, as well as wellness and strengths-based approaches to counseling. Dr. Dixon also conducts research in the areas of gender and ethnic minority identity development, the adolescent period of the lifespan, cross cultural competence and multicultural counseling, school counselors’ work climates, academic persistence and achievement, spirituality, and wellness across the lifespan. Most recently, she received the College of Education Dean’s Excellence Award for Teaching at Arizona State University.
Areas of Interest and Inquiry
Dr. Dixon’s current research interests include gender and ethnic minority identity development, the adolescent period of the lifespan, cross cultural competence and multicultural counseling, school counselors’ work climates, students’ academic persistence and achievement, and mattering, spirituality, and wellness across the lifespan. Her areas of specialization include developing strengths-based school interventions for use with adolescents, aligning school counselors’ daily work activities with national models of school counseling, multicultural competence of school counselors, and ethnic/minority adolescents’ identity development and academic achievement and persistence. Dr. Dixon is a member of various professional state, regional, and national organizations including: the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Psychological Association (APA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) and the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES), and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Dr. Dixon is an editorial board member for the Journal of Counseling and Development, Professional School Counseling, and the Journal for Specialists in Group Work. In addition, she has published a variety of journal articles and book chapters.
