Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does ProTeach mean?
ProTeach stands for PROfessional TEACHer.

Are there any upper-division ProTeach courses I can take at my community college?
No. All ProTeach courses are 3000 level or higher. There are no lower-division substitutes.

Are there any upper-division ProTeach courses I can take at another university?
Yes. There are a few non-cohort courses that my be transferred in to the ProTeach program, if taken before the final 30 credit hours. See an advisor in the COE Office of Student Services in G416 Norman.

Who is my faculty advisor?
You will find your faculty advisor by checking the list posted outside 2215 Norman Hall. You can find your graduate faculty advisor by checking your admission letter to the Master's program from the School of Teaching and Learning.

How do I register?
First semester students see Robin Crawford in Norman 2215. All other students will register through ISIS.

How many hours am I allowed to take during a semester?
You are allowed to take 18 hours maximum any semester. A lighter load is recommended in the senior year.

How and when should I meet the GRE requirement?
We encourage students to take the GRE for the first time during the second semester of their junior year. Test preparation bulletins are available in G416 Norman Hall in Student Services. Free computer practice exams are available through the Office of Recruitment and Outreach in G415 Norman Hall. The official GRE web site is http://www.gre.org.

What happens if my GPA falls below 3.0?
Hopefully, this will not happen to you. However, if it does you will be placed on academic probation or suspension. You will be notified by mail of your status and of your next steps. Your continuation in the program will depend upon whether you are able to raise your GPA to the required 3.0 within one semester. You can not graduate from the master's program without a 3.0 GPA.

What is a specialization in the Unified Elementary ProTeach program's Fifth Year?
During your graduate year (Fifth Year) you must decide whether you will specialize in Elementary or Special Education. You will receive additional information about specialization options early in the junior year.

How and when do I make sure I've completed all the courses and certification exams I need to take prior to graduation?
SASS degree audits are available to students through ISIS. This is an audit of your Bachelor's degree requirements only. Be sure to complete a GRAD CHECK from the Office of Student Services, G416 Norman Hall. We recommend you to this before your first summer term and again early in your senior year. If you need help interpreting your SASS audit, you can receive help in G416 Norman Hall.
For your Master's degree, you should consult your planned program of study which must be filed during your first semester of the graduate program. It will also state what Florida certification exams must be passed prior to graduation.

Yes. Applications to graduate are available in 222 Criser Hall and must be submitted by the published deadline.
