ProTeach Semester One
Most courses in your program must be taken in sequence, within a required "cohort" schedule. These courses are carefully organized to ensure that you are building upon previous knowledge and have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in each course. As such, schedules for each cohort are planned out for you in advance. This advanced planning serves to avoid scheduling problems and to ensure successful completion of all required coursework.
Themes for semester one in the Unifed Elementary ProTeach program include diversity, relationships with children and families , and the role of music and art in education. Semester One core courses include the following:
- EDF 3115: Child Development for Inclusive Education
- EEX 3070: Teacher and Learners in the Inclusive School
- SDS 3430: Families and Communities in Education
- LAE 3005: Children's Literature in Education
Semester One also includes the following recommended courses, which may be taken with the first-term cohort or at a later time:
- ARE 4314: Art for Elementary Schools
- MUE 3210: Music for Elementary Schools
To register for your cohort, see Ms. Robin Crawford in Norman Hall 2403-C on or after your registration date. Transfer students will register during the Transfer Orientation. Robin Crawford will let you know which cohorts are available and will reserve a space for you in your selected cohort. If there is a change in the curriculum for the first semester, Robin will advise you of the change.
Field Experiences
You will have organized field experiences during every semester of your program that support core courses and provide opportunities for the application of concepts acquired through coursework. Details about field experiences will be discussed in-class during the first week of each semester. A brief description of the field experiences in semester one follows.
Field Experiences During Semester One
During the first semester, you will participate in the Bright Futures Mentoring project.
You will be paired with a child who lives in a local public housing neighborhood to spend time with twice a week to work on school-related activities and to give you an opportunity to become familiar with the child, family, and neighborhood.
Bright Futures sessions are held Monday through Thursday 3-6 p.m. in community centers within each neighborhood. Please try to keep your afternoon schedule flexible. You will need to budget time in your schedule to participate. For instance, you might plan to do Bright Futures 5-6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, or you might plan for 3-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
