General Announcements

Norman Hall Tours for New Students
Members of the Student Alliance of Graduates in Education (SAGE) will offer tours of Norman on Thursday, August 20 from 2-5pm. Tours will begin in the Education Library every half hour. SAGE is a cross-departmental organization that serves as an academic, professional, and social support group for graduate students. Find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/227890605603/).


SAGE Social – Thursday, August 20th
All new and returning graduate students in the College of Education are invited to attend the SAGE (Student Alliance of Graduates in Education) Back to School Social at the Swamp Restaurant, 1642 W University Ave, on Thursday, August 20th at 5:30pm. Relax over appetizers (we’re buying!), make new friends, and reconnect with old classmates before the fall semester gets underway. ELEMENTARY, EARLY CHILDHOOD, & SPECIAL ED FULL-TIME INTERNS
If you are completing your full-time internship this FALL as an Elementary, Early Childhood, or Special Ed intern, plan to attend the Professional Orientation Seminar on Wednesday, September 9th at the Kirby Smith Board Room. The session will be from 1:30-3:00pm. Two local principals will share information about interviewing and expectations of first-year teachers. Questions will also be answered about certification.


Projects for Haiti (P4H) – 2015 Florida Connected Conference
We believe that passionate individuals can inspire local and global change! We, Projects for Haiti (P4H), are a Gainesville-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to partner with Haitians educationally and vocationally while collaborating with the international community to advocate for global sustainable practices. We are thrilled to announce that o​n ​November 14, 2015 we will be hosting the 2015 Florida Connected Conference at 8am at The University of Florida Straughn Center. EDP 6052- SPECIAL TOPICS GRADUATE COURSE: Cognitive Psychology Applied to Education – Fall 2015
This course is designed for Graduate students interested in a cognitive science approach to modern educational issues. Cognitive Psychology is highly interdisciplinary field drawing from linguistics, artificial intelligence, philosophy, biology, computer science and neuroscience. Consequently, students from varied disciplines (both inside and outside of education) are encouraged to enroll. See flyer for more details.


ENC 5319- Scholarly Writing for Publication- Writing for Intersectional & Social Justice Research – Fall 2015
This workshop-style seminar is a valuable course for graduate students (and their advisor) as it will give a venue to make progress on and enhance thesis/dissertation writing or other research projects, allowing advisors to focus more on conceptual/methodological issues than on the writing. And, it brings a lens that many students are hungry for: intersectionality and social justice perspectives. See flyer for more details.

Tutors Needed for The College Reach-Out Program (CROP) – See attached flyer for application details
The College Reach-out Program (CROP) is a statewide project designed to increase the number of students who successfully complete a postsecondary education. Its primary objective is to strengthen the educational motivation and preparation of low-income and educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6-12 who otherwise would be unlikely to seek admission to a community college, state university or independent postsecondary institution without special support and recruitment efforts.


Bradford High School – Starke, Florida
Two English positions at Bradford High School in Starke, Florida (centrally located within 35-45 miles of St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Lake City and Gainesville right of off U.S. Hwy 301). Oasis Preparatory Academy – Orlando, Florida

STEAM Education/Teaching Intern
The Cade Museum for Creativity + Invention is looking for a passionate, engaged and committed volunteer to assist the staff in programs and curriculum development. The internship will provide the student with real-world experience in: Small classroom/Wet Lab/Fabrication Lab settings with students ages 6-16, Curriculum research and development, Class preparation, Informal science education techniques in the STEAM fields. Kindergarten teaching position (full time)
Boulware Springs Charter School is seeking a highly-qualified Kindergarten classroom teacher. The position is available immediately. Responsibilities include managing a classroom of students, creating and implementing innovative and rigorous lesson plans, monitoring student progress, using data driven instruction to adjust to student learning, teaching character education, creating a warm environment, and working as a team member throughout the school. Gleim Publications, Inc.
We would like to hire an Education graduate student to pursue some computer based research projects. We will ask him/her to pursue topics such as Adaptive Learning, Competitor Websites, etc. 10-20 hours a week, $12/hour to train, thereafter $15/hour. Volunteer Opportunities: Kid’s Yoga
Milestones in the Making, Lisa Schiavoni & Associates is a family-owned & -operated private practice serving children & families in Greater-Gainesville for 30+ years. Our staff is looking for volunteers to assist with a number of ‘Yoga for Youth’ initiatives resuming in the Fall & continuing indefinitely.
Volunteers will receive personalized training in behavioral modalities & oversight by a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). Position expectations range from 3-6 hours biweekly; & require a minimum commitment of 2 academic semesters. Yoga experience is desirable but NOT required

Classes – in need of volunteer support – vary in time, date & venue; but an updated ‘Kids Yoga Schedule’ will be listed at www.MilestonesintheMaking.com by August 20th. Babysitting/ Nanny/ Tutoring

English Tutor Needed

I am looking for a math tutor familiar with the common core way of teaching for my 7th grade son. He is a student in the Lyceum at Lincoln Middle School in Gainesville.  I am looking for someone who is reliable and reasonably priced. Educator for Formative Assessments Needed
I home school my son and wish to hire an educator to assess him. He is eight and advanced in math. The principle responsibility is to perform periodic formative assessments to provide feedback to improve his education. Additionally, the State of Florida requires submission of an annual appraisal of home school students by a qualifed person, so a teaching certification would be helpful.
