To add a minor, students must obtain the approval of their college on the Application to Add or Cancel a Minor (available from the Office of the University Registrar, Room 222 Criser Hall; or www.registrar.ufl.edu). The form is then submitted to Room G-416 Norman Hall for approval. Students must apply for the minor after 60 but before 100 credit hours have been earned.

The intent of this Education Minor is to provide students with an understanding of the purpose and function of education and the social and psychological forces that affect young people. It is NOT intended as a teacher certification option. For courses that are “departmentally controlled” contact the department offering the course for assistance with registration.

A minimum of 15 hours from the courses listed below with grades of “C” or better. Courses must be selected from at least 4 of the 5 sections, A through E. Each course is for three (3) semester hours unless otherwise indicated.

The Pathways to Teaching Minor is an alternative certification program (Professional Training Option) leading to certification in Florida. It allows a subject area content major to complete the professional preparation coursework required by Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-4.006(2), FAC, while completing the bachelor’s degree. It is ideal for those who wish to teach a middle school or high school subject. Admission to this minor requires a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
The content of the PTT Minor includes the following:
- Pre-professional level training in the Florida Education Accomplished Practices (FEAPs)
- Integrated school-based observation/participation experiences associated with all competencies covered in the Professional Training Option
- Professional preparation course work in assessment, classroom management, human development and learning, instructional strategies, curriculum and special methods, and reading competency 2
Upon completion of the bachelor’s degree, the PTT minor, and a passing score on an appropriate Subject Area Examination (SAE) of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE), the applicant will be eligible for a temporary certificate to teach in Florida.
Three tracks of the Pathways to Teaching Minor are available. Track 1 is a generic track, open to any non-Education student. Track 2 is a mathematics track, limited to students in a math or math-related major. Track 3 is a science track, limited to students in a science or science-related major.
