What are the legal risks when AI is used to make decisions about students? How can we protect student privacy, avoid bias, and ensure fairness in systems that may not always be easy to understand?

This session will explore the key legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in education. Using real-world examples and guided discussion, we’ll look at how current laws and policies apply to AI tools—and where they may fall short. We’ll also talk about the responsibilities educators have when using these tools with students.

This session is intended for anyone working in or around education, including teachers, administrators, and scholars. Whether you’re new to AI or already using it in your school or daily practice, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the risks and responsibilities involved, as well as tools to support ethical decision-making in your practice.

[/et_pb_toggle][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,3_4″ module_class=”sessions day1-am” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||60px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://education.ufl.edu/ai/files/2025/05/Lisa-Headshot.jpg” title_text=”Lisa-Headshot” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_blurb title=”The Art of Teaching AI – Creativity, Collaboration and the Future of Learning” content_max_width=”100%” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Open Sans||||||||” header_text_color=”#0E1D2F” custom_margin=”||0px|||” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Presenter: Lisa Hauser

Date: May 20

Time: 10:45–11:15 AM

Room: 503

Organization Name: Code/Art

[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_toggle title=”Session Description ” open_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” closed_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” icon_color=”#58486A” toggle_icon=”;||divi||400″ open_icon_color=”#58486A” open_toggle_icon=”:||divi||400″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” title_font=”Open Sans||||||||” custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding=”16px||16px||true|false” border_radii=”on|20px|20px|20px|20px” border_color_all=”#58486A” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

What does it mean to create in the age of artificial intelligence? Despite making high-stakes decision about who does and does not get extra supports and interventions, these teams discussions and processes are often vulnerable to unintentional and subjective influences, as seen in fields like medicine, employment, and justice. To examine the influence of language patterns on decision making in school-based teams, we applied advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, including Large-Language Models (LLMs) to analyze meeting transcripts from teams focused on supporting students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Our findings reveal a higher occurrence of negative emotionality and negative adjectives used for some students more than others. These results align with the long-documented disproportionality in school discipline referrals and unmet mental health needs among Black students. Our findings underscore the need for strategies to mitigate subjective discussions and decision-making in school teams as one approach to addressing these disparities. We will introduce an initial intervention strategy we are testing in ongoing research and explore how it might be integrated with AI tools to better support teams and their role as gateways to the services and supports students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges need.

[/et_pb_toggle][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,3_4″ module_class=”sessions day1-am” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_slider dot_nav_custom_color=”#58486A” module_class=”presenter” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” header_level=”h3″ header_font=”Open Sans|700||on|||||” header_text_color=”#194787″ header_font_size=”18px” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” custom_padding=”0px|0px||0px|false|true” custom_css_slide_image=”margin-top: 0!important;” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_slide heading=”Bryn Humphrey” image=”https://education.ufl.edu/ai/files/2025/05/Bryn_Humphrey.jpg” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_transition=”on”][/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=”Lindsey Harker” image=”https://education.ufl.edu/ai/files/2025/05/Lindsey_Harker.jpg” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_transition=”on”][/et_pb_slide][/et_pb_slider][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_blurb title=”AI-Powered Assessment: The Lastinger Center’s Journey to Qualitative Grading at Scale” content_max_width=”100%” _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Open Sans||||||||” header_text_color=”#0E1D2F” custom_margin=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Presenter: Bryn Humphrey

Co-presenter: Lindsey Harker

Date: May 20

Time: 10:45–11:15 AM

Room: 504

Organization Name: UF Lastinger Center for Learning

[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_toggle title=”Session Description ” open_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” closed_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” icon_color=”#58486A” toggle_icon=”;||divi||400″ open_icon_color=”#58486A” open_toggle_icon=”:||divi||400″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” title_font=”Open Sans||||||||” custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding=”16px||16px||true|false” border_radii=”on|20px|20px|20px|20px” border_color_all=”#58486A” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Join this session to discover how the Lastinger Center for Learning has revolutionized assessment at scale through a custom AI-grading model for qualitative practicum assignments. Rather than offering fixed conclusions, the session invites participants to consider how AI authority might shape students’ ownership over the learning process, and under what conditions higher levels of student agency lead to more effective learning—or potentially off-track discourse. Participants will explore a framework for identifying real-time shifts in agency and authority during AI-student interactions, and discuss emerging patterns across different types of conversations, such as when students clarify, elaborate, or diverge from task-related goals. Pilot evidence will highlight both the promise and pitfalls of learning‑by‑teaching with generative AI. In this session, participants will get a behind-the-scenes look at “PrincipalGPT,” a custom-built chatbot that simulates a school administrator involved in a legally complex scenario. Created using ChatGPT’s custom GPT feature and a pre-written case study, this AI tool was used in a graduate school law course to engage students in an interactive role-play activity.

Students were tasked with talking with the AI principal to uncover legally relevant facts, apply their knowledge of school law, and offer real-time legal and ethical guidance. Afterward, they engaged in an online reflective discussion with their classmates to analyze their decision-making and deepen their understanding of the law in practice.

This session will quickly walk through how the Custom GPT was built, how the simulation worked, and how it supported both learning and assessment. By analyzing data from the New Worlds Reading Initiative, Florida’s free at-home literacy program that has served over 400,000 eligible students statewide since its launch in October 2021, we demonstrate how decision tree models (chosen for their interpretability) were used to identify patterns in program eligibility and enrollment among prekindergarten through fifth grade students. We examined which student characteristics predict reading below grade level (eligibility) and which eligible students are less likely to enroll in the program. We prioritized model transparency to ensure results could be clearly communicated to non-technical stakeholders such as program staff, policymakers, and community partners. Designed for educators, researchers, policy advocates, and AI-curious practitioners, this session will include a walk-through of our approach, key findings about enrollment disparities, and how these insights can be used to enhance outreach and increase enrollment. Participants will leave with replicable strategies for using explainable AI to guide policy and practice in literacy programs.
