Cleveland State Community College’s, Cleveland, TN, Do the Math Program won the 2009 Bellwether Award in Instructional Programs and Services. The program’s effectiveness has been demonstrated by external studies. Since 2009, Do the Math has spread to Chattanooga State Community College, Chattanooga, TN, and other colleges across the nation, and is now being implemented in high schools.

– Doug Pauley, Director of Training and Development for Central Community College in Columbus, Nebraska

In 2010, Chattanooga State Community College created the WACKER INSTITUTE to prepare 650 technical employees for a new1.85 billion dollar polysilicon manufacturing plant being built in the Chattanooga region by WACKER POLYSILICON NORTH AMERICA. The Institute became operational in January 2011. The project has been an enormous success. The WACKER INSTITUTE has graduated 198 students to date. 182 graduates are already employed or hold job offers. 83% of students enrolled have persisted or are persisting to completion, a rate over three times the national average for engineering technology programs. Depending on work experience and background, graduates earn annually between $52,000 and $65,000 at WACKER. The creation of the curriculum in partnership with WACKER and the development of classrooms, laboratories, and a state-of-the-art Pilot Plant training facility will be discussed.

Being a Force for Good: National Public Policy Summit on Developmental Math

A panel of math developmental education specialists discusses the current climate of developmental math education at community colleges. Consisting of policy experts, faculty, administrators, and presidents, the discussion will provide an overview of different perspectives regarding the movement of development math education.
