Logan Wins CSI Leadership Essay Competition and Chosen as CSI Fellow

Headshot-1-180x300Sandi Logan, doctoral student in the Counselor Education Program at UF, won first place in the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) leadership essay contest. The focus of the essay competition was on advocacy to strengthen professional identity within the counseling profession. Her essay will remain online (CSI Leadership Essay Competition) to inspire and guide future generations of counselors as they develop their own leadership talents and styles. Logan was also selected to serve as a CSI Leadership Fellow for the 2014-2015 year. There are only 10 fellows chosen each year and Sandi was one of the few chosen for this honor.

CSI is the international honor society for the counseling profession that focuses on academic and professional excellence. CSI was founded in 1985 and has over 90,000 members today.

Group Counseling Students Experience the Ropes Course

Group Counseling is a counselor education course required for all master’s level counseling students. As part of the class, the students went to the Ropes Course to experience the group process through a series of problem-solving and teamwork activities.

Students, Faculty, and Alum Attend the ACES Conference in Denver

Counselor Education students and faculty attended the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Conference in Denver, Colorado in October. Students and faculty presented on a variety of topics related to counselor education and supervision, attended presentations, networked with others, and spent time reconnecting with alumni.

Dr. Jacqueline Swank Receives Pre-Tenure Counselor Educator Award

Swank-SACESDr. Jacqueline Swank has been honored with the 2013 Outstanding Pre-tenure Counselor Educator Award by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES). She is considered an emerging leader in counselor education among her colleagues. Her research productivity is exceptional. In her past three years at the College of Education, she has collected six awards for her research and practice and is a principal investigator in three grant-funded projects. Additionally, she has 20 publications, 16 of which are as first author with four manuscripts under review and nine research studies under way. Her research interests include counselor development and supervision, assessment related to counseling, creative intervention in counseling, and children and adolescents. She is also well known for her service on several professional committees and organizations and as a dedicated mentor for graduate students.

Henesy Receives SACES Outstanding Master's Student Award

IMG_0184Rachel Henesy is the recipient of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Outstanding Master’s Student Award. She is in her third year in the M.AE/Ed.S degree program for Mental Health Counseling at the University of Florida. She has volunteered as a certified crisis line counselor for the Alachua County Crisis Center and as a children’s tutor with a local advocacy group. Rachel is a member of two mixed-level research teams and has worked as a student assistant on three grant-funded research projects. Rachel has co-presented at conferences held by the American Counseling Association, the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education, and the Florida Counseling Association. Rachel currently teaches Introduction to Educational Psychology at the University of Florida, while also completing her counseling internship at an alternative school for adolescent girls. She is the co-president for the UF student chapter of Counselors for Social Justice and serves as co-chair for the Advocacy Committee of Chi Sigma Iota’s Beta Chapter. Rachel also serves on committees for national and state counseling associations.

Chen awarded research grant from ACES

Olivia Chen, doctoral student in the Counselor Education program, was awarded a research grant from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) for her study entitled, “Development and Initial Validation of the Multicultural Counseling Competence Scale for Counselors in Both Confucian and Collective Countries.” Chen’s research interests include multicultural counseling, indigenous counseling, assessment in counseling, multicultural supervision and counselor education.

McCarthy Selected to Participate in Emerging Leaders Program

Shannon1Shannon McCarthy, doctoral candidate in the UF Counselor Education program was selected to participate in the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Emerging Leaders Program. McCarthy is an alumni fellow and is actively involved in research, teaching, and service. Her research interests include counselor development/training, family-school collaboration, school counselors’ involvement with families, and the effect of mental illness on families.

The 2013 Florida Counseling Association (FCA) Conference was held in Tampa, Florida in early October and was well attended by UF Counselor Education students, faculty, and alumni. Several students presented poster and education sessions and participated in various conference events.

New Group of Master's/Specialists Students start Counselor Education Program

The students encompass a lot of diversity, representing several states and five countries beyond the United States including Canada, Cuba, Peru, Swaziland, and Venezuela.
