Dr. John Super Joins the Counselor Education Faculty

Image 1Dr. Super was originally from Romeo, Michigan, a suburb north of Detroit.  He did his undergrad work in Arkansas and received his master’s degree from the University of Central Florida in Marriage and Family Therapy.  After receiving his degree, he worked in and developed a clinical private practice employing five other counselors, and volunteered counseling services for a community organization.  Dr. Super specialized working with clients in his private practice in the areas of spirituality, relational issues for both traditional and same-sex couples, and individuals in the LGBT community.  Dr. Super did his doctoral work at the University of Central Florida and earned a degree in Counselor Education.

Dr. Super is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with the state of Florida, and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) with the National Board of Certified Counselors.  He is active in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Counseling and the European Branch of the American Counseling Association.

Dr. Super’s research agenda has solidified into several distinct areas: (a) the spiritual and personal identity development of LGBT individuals; (b) the development of counselor self-efficacy and the lessening of anxiety for counselors in training; and (c) the grief of individuals who have lost a pet.

Dr. Super has many hobbies, but at the top of the list is traveling.  He travels both domestically and internationally each year.  Also, his family and dogs are central to his life.
