Frequently Asked Questions

Do prospective students pick their faculty mentors during the application, or are they assigned after admission?

Prospective students may mention any faculty member they believe matches their research interests in their application statement, though this is optional. Upon entering the program, students are assigned a temporary advisor based on our interpretation of best fit. This advisor remains until the student chooses a permanent chair/advisor, who may be the same person or someone else.

How many years of counseling experience do most incoming doctoral students have?

The counseling experience of our students before entering the program varies widely. Some students may have just completed their master’s program, having limited experience outside the requirements to earn their master’s degree. Others might join us with several years of professional experience and be fully licensed practitioners. While we recommend having some experience after completing a master’s degree, it is not a mandatory requirement for admission.

How many students are accepted each academic year?

We accept 6-7 students each year.

Is funding available for graduate students?

We have some funding for research assistantships and teaching assistantships, but the number available varies each year.

Is the GRE required?

Yes, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required to complete your application for this program. Please note that the UF Office of Admissions will only accept scores sent directly from ETS. Use code 5812 to send your scores.

What is the average GRE score?

The average GRE score among accepted students is around 300.

I am an international applicant, is the TOEFL required for admission?

The TOEFL (English proficiency) is required by UF for international applicants unless:

They have successfully completed one academic year in a degree-seeking program at a recognized/regionally accredited university or college in the United States or a country where English is the official language.

OR

They hold an earned equivalent of associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree from a recognized/regionally accredited college or university in the United States or country where English is the official language.

Are there preferences or requirements for who writes the letters of recommendation?

We recommend that at least 1-2 letters, if not all, of your letters are from faculty you have previously worked with. Sometimes, prospective students have a supervisor from their employment or internship site write them a letter of recommendation, which is also accepted.
