Program websites, specifically, are intended for prospective students. Documents for current students, including program plans, forms and handbooks, should be distributed through alternative methods. These pages should include headings, links, and other structures to help with navigation and clarity, and to provide answers to common questions.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that faculty work with us to turn other internally managed documents, including department-specific application agreements, waivers and college-wide program applications, into web forms. This is a useful alternative for converting text-based files when you are not the document\u2019s owner. To use this tool, upload your document and request the \u201ctext over image\u201d output.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;Option C: Your PDF document has selectable text and doesn&#8217;t require extensive editing (Adobe Acrobat)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<p>Adobe Acrobat Pro includes accessibility tools that can be used to make your document more accessible. Adobe provides an overview of the features in its <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/acrobat\/using\/create-verify-pdf-accessibility.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help articles<\/a>. As with any automated tool, you should manually verify the following elements to ensure compliance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure security settings do not prevent access to screen readers and assistive technologies,<\/li>\n<li>Text is not embedded as an image,<\/li>\n<li>Content has been properly tagged,<\/li>\n<li>The reading order in the Tags panel is logical,<\/li>\n<li>Document language is set,<\/li>\n<li>Document has a title in application bar,<\/li>\n<li>Long documents have bookmarks to skip to needed content,<\/li>\n<li>Text has adequate color contrast,<\/li>\n<li>Images have alternative text set,<\/li>\n<li>Tables have equal numbers of columns in each row and vice versa,<\/li>\n<li>Table tags are properly nested<\/li>\n<li>Form fields have descriptions,<\/li>\n<li>Headings have proper hierarchy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PDFs that do not meet these minimum standards will not be added to College of Education websites.<\/p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;Option D: Your PDF document has text embedded as an image (Adobe Acrobat)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221;]<p>Screen readers cannot read text that is part of an image. This means that most scanned documents are not accessible unless special steps are taken to convert the image into individual text characters. Adobe offers a free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/acrobat\/online\/ocr-pdf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Tool<\/a>\u00a0for this purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>Making Image Based Text in PDFs Accessible<\/h4>\n<p>To make PDFs containing image based text accessible, you should:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/acrobat\/online\/ocr-pdf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OCR tool<\/a> to convert the image to text.<\/li>\n<li>Verify all of the text in the image was properly converted.
