{"id":20129,"date":"2022-03-25T07:46:28","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T11:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=20129"},"modified":"2022-03-25T07:46:28","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T07:46:28","slug":"kara-dawson-appointed-to-the-academy-of-distinguished-teaching-scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/25\/kara-dawson-appointed-to-the-academy-of-distinguished-teaching-scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"Kara Dawson appointed to the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/dawson-kara\/\">Kara Dawson<\/a>, professor of educational technology, has been appointed to the UF Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I came to UF in 1999 because I wanted a chance to be part of building a program,\u201d said Dawson. \u201cIt is clear now in 2022 that we have grown in many positive ways and I have had the opportunity to collaborate with so many amazing colleagues to help this happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selection for this academy recognizes Dawson&#8217;s &#8220;integration of superior teaching and research and a record of distinguished scholarly accomplishment.&#8221; Throughout her career, Dawson&#8217;s contributions to the UF community have been recognized by the university. She previously received UF&#8217;s Doctoral Dissertation Advisor\/Mentoring Award and the College of Education&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2016\/05\/16\/qa-with-kara-dawson-working-to-bridge-the-digital-divide-for-all-learners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Irving and Rose Fien Professorship for 2015-2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. From 2013 to 2016, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2013\/05\/03\/ed-techs-kara-dawson-doubles-up-on-uf-honors-for-research-mentoring\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">she served as a UFRF Professor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a title bestowed by the University of Florida Research Foundation. Despite these previous accolades, Dawson said she applied for the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars because of her colleagues\u2019 encouragement.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I would have never thought to apply if some colleagues didn\u2019t encourage me so I appreciate that people who know my work thought I might have a shot at this award,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is special because, despite the title, the award is not just about teaching. It is about having a balance of teaching, program development, mentoring, research and service that has positively influenced the university over many years.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her recent appointment to the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars will allow Dawson to help shape the future of teaching at UF. The academy advises the Associate Provost on issues related to the &#8220;implementation of policies that enhance the University of Florida&#8217;s ability to continuously improve its high level of academic excellence.&#8221; Dawson is eager to bring her classroom and scholarly expertise to the academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My dear colleague, Nancy Dana, won this award in 2021, and I look forward to participating in the Academy with her in ways that cultivate a culture of valuing a scholarly approach to educating students,\u201d Dawson shared. \u201cI also look forward to meeting the other Academy members and learning from them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elaborating, Dawson said, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I think my stance toward developing academic programs based on data, collaboration with colleagues and feedback from students will be most valuable.\u201d She also hopes her openness to new ideas and affinity for innovative, research-based uses of technology \u201cwill lead to improvements in our program and programs across the university.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDr. Dawson has proven her excellence time and again with an unwavering focus on student success, both in our programs and in the field,\u201d said Dean Glenn Good. \u201cThis appointment is further evidence of her commitment to teaching and learning, and of the caliber of faculty at the college.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dawson will retain the title of Distinguished Teaching Scholar and continue to be a part of the academy following her three-year term on the advisory board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Kara Dawson, Ph.D.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kara Dawson, professor of educational technology, has been appointed to the UF Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":20141,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-20129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-awards"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.0 (Yoast SEO v22.0) -
