{"id":20917,"date":"2023-11-02T10:14:01","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T14:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=20917"},"modified":"2025-08-19T16:45:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T16:45:17","slug":"uf-professor-new-reading-instruction-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2023\/11\/02\/uf-professor-new-reading-instruction-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Authors New Reading Instruction Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/fang-zhihui\/\">Zhihui Fang<\/a>, professor of education, has written and released his sixth book, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demystifying Academic Reading.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an Irving &amp; Rose Fien Endowed Professor of Education in the School of Teaching and Learning, Fang has taken an analytical approach to disciplinary literacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disciplinary literacy is a new, potentially more powerful approach to teaching reading in content areas,\u201d Fang said. \u201cMy book provides the first state-of-the-art review on the topic that helps demystify the current debate on the \u2018Science of Reading\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attracting different students from across campus, Fang\u2019s new work has pushed our reading and literacy department to be unlike any other. The work allows students and instructors to dive deep into the details of developing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> relevant discipline-specific insights and strategies that are essential to productive learning across academic subjects. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fang has shared that this book could serve as a companion book to &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demystifying Academic Writing: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Genres, Moves, Skills, and Strategies&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Fang, 2021) as well as a sequel to &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reading in Secondary Content Areas: A Language-Based Pedagogy<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Fang &amp; Schleppegrell, 2008) both authored and co-authored by him.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book should be of primary interest to teachers and teacher educators in K-12 contexts.
