{"id":21054,"date":"2023-12-05T14:49:56","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T19:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=21054"},"modified":"2023-12-05T14:49:56","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T14:49:56","slug":"university-of-floridas-college-of-education-to-expand-undergraduate-research-and-transform-math-learning-statewide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2023\/12\/05\/university-of-floridas-college-of-education-to-expand-undergraduate-research-and-transform-math-learning-statewide\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Florida\u2019s College of Education to expand undergraduate research and transform math learning statewide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With support from University of Florida President Ben Sasse\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2023\/11\/third-strategic-funding\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">strategic funding initiative<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, two projects are taking shape in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">College of Education<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">: one to accelerate undergraduate research and another to transform mathematics education in Florida.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The SALT-Math: Scalable AI-Augmented Learning by Teaching for Math Education project (which received $930,000 over three years), aims to revolutionize K-12 mathematics learning in Florida and beyond by implementing a learning-by-teaching framework that uses a large language model to flip students&#8217; roles as teachers to AI agents (resulting in enhanced student outcomes).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>UF Students as Research Scholars (STARS): Illuminating Pathways for Undergraduate Research and Innovation received $330,000 over three years\u202fto pair undergraduates with faculty for research opportunities. The objective of this project is to increase the number of University Scholars Program applicants, grow the participation in the College of Education Research Symposium, support graduate assistantships, and reward excellence in faculty mentorship of undergraduate researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe College of the Education is changing the way we teach and learn in Florida, and this initiative is a prime example of that,\u201d Sasse said. \u201cThrough the use of AI and large language models, this program will help revolutionize K-12 math learning throughout the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe need to celebrate and encourage faculty mentorship of undergraduate researchers, and UF STARS champions that work,\u201d Sasse said. \u201cThis initiative will introduce more undergrads to enriching research opportunities and help them use their ideas to change the world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/xing-wanli\/\">Wanli Xing<\/a>, Ph.D., an associate professor of educational technology in the College of Education, looks forward to embarking on the SALT-Math project.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cOur enthusiasm stems from harnessing the immense power of the HiPerGator supercomputing infrastructure, allowing us to analyze millions of interactive math scenarios and responses, along with a billion lines of log data,\u201d Xing said. \u201cThis process is instrumental in refining our large language models, thereby catalyzing a transformative impact on K-12 math education.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">SALT-Math will be created and distributed in the context of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastinger.center.ufl.edu\/work\/mathematics\/math-nation\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lastinger Center for Learning\u2019s Math Nation platform<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which was adopted as the core K-12 math curriculum in the state of Florida (and engages more than 1 million K-12 students across the United States annually).\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Wanli Xing<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While SALT-Math is impacting these students, UF STARS will be helping to build the infrastructure and capacity for bachelor\u2019s-level research. Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/colon-elayne\/\">Elayne Col\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0sees great opportunity in pairing students with faculty and nurturing meaningful connections around research.
