{"id":22141,"date":"2024-05-22T12:35:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-22T16:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=22141"},"modified":"2024-05-22T12:35:36","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T12:35:36","slug":"two-college-of-education-professors-honored-with-2024-graduate-education-champion-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/22\/two-college-of-education-professors-honored-with-2024-graduate-education-champion-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Two College of Education professors honored with 2024 Graduate Education Champion Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two College of Education faculty members have been recognized for their commitment to enhancing the University of Florida graduate student experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/crippen-kent\/\">Kent Crippen, Ph.D.<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/faculty\/huggins-anne-corinne\/\">Corinne Huggins-Manley, Ph.D.<\/a>, received the University of Florida Graduate School\u2019s yearly <a href=\"https:\/\/grad.ufl.edu\/articles\/2024\/news-202403\/28-02.html\">Graduate Education Champion Award (GECA)<\/a> for 2024 after being nominated by current UF graduate students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the UF Graduate School\u2019s Office of Graduate Student Support and Engagement, GECA award winners are honored for their remarkable efforts and contributions toward creating an enriching and supportive environment for graduate students, fostering excellence in teaching and learning, and promoting a collaborative culture within the campus community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Huggins-Manley, a professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/research-evaluation-methods\/\">research and evaluation methodology<\/a>, was delightfully surprised when the award was announced in March. Her students, both former and current advisees, had organized the nomination in secret, and she was touched that they would go out of their way to nominate her. They expressed generous and heartfelt praise, referring to the professor as a dear friend and \u201can angel in the world,\u201d with one student writing, \u201cDr. Manley is my academic mother. She\u2026 lights up our research life when we walk through the dark.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nominators explained that Huggins-Manley, who also serves as the <a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/hdose\/\">School of Human Development and Organizational Studies in Education<\/a>\u2019s (HDOSE) director, cultivates a supportive atmosphere where students are empowered to actively engage with the academic community. She is known to guide her students through each step of the research process and is deeply committed to their personal and professional success. As one nomination letter describes, \u201cher CV speaks volumes, showcasing numerous publications featuring her students, a testament to her commitment to students\u2019 growth and development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The HDOSE director views mentorship through a mutually beneficial lens, with her students constantly inspiring her to elevate her professional development. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe students push me,\u201d Huggins-Manley shares. \u201cThey want to work with AI, with new methods, with other innovations in our field \u2013 so we as faculty have no choice but to keep up to date and ensure we learn enough to guide them. They keep us on our toes to continue elevating our own work!\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crippen, a professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/education.ufl.edu\/science-education\/\">STEM education<\/a>, says mentorship has led him to identify and refine more collaborative traits within himself as he develops them within others. He sees the mentorship process as not simply helping students but \u201cbuilding a group of colleagues\u201d whom he can look forward to working with now and in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The STEM education professor particularly appreciates the award as an acknowledgment that his mentorship style holds value for students, saying \u201cI appreciate that it resonates with them \u2013 that it\u2019s more than just, \u2018What courses do I take? What job do I get?\u2019 That there are these other intangible aspects we provide that impact people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of those intangibles, he implies, are what bring students to the university in the first place. While many associate the concept of the \u201cGator standard\u201d with decades of tradition surrounding UF\u2019s athletic programs, Crippen asserts that this standard applies to the entire UF community \u2013 faculty, staff, and students alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Gator standard is what is inferred behind people\u2019s response to \u2018Go Gators!\u2019\u201d says Crippen. \u201cMy mentorship approach is trying to foster a community of people based on their interests and their view of themselves, but also in relation to this shared standard that we try to make as explicit as possible in order to live up to that multidimensional expectation.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the students who nominated him, Crippen\u2019s approach is working. One student wrote that they spoke to countless others who felt that the STEM professor had profoundly impacted their lives. Nominators noted his passion for collaboration in research, support and encouragement for his students, and ability to create \u201can inclusive classroom where\u2026 everyone\u2019s ideas are respected and valued.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both award-winning faculty members are credited with nurturing confidence and resiliency as they guide students through rigorous graduate curricula, and several former students now have robust academic careers of their own. For Crippen and Huggins-Manley, research experience, work-life balance, and collaborative relationships are foundational for a successful graduate student experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople come here for a reason,\u201d Crippen explains. \u201cIt\u2019s their personal interests coupled with the institution and what it represents.
