Program Overview

The REM program prepares M.Ed. students to work on positions that require research design and analysis of educational data. The M.Ed. program requires a practicum experience instead of a master’s thesis. M.Ed. graduates work in positions such as data analyst, data scientist, measurement specialist, and program evaluator. The M.Ed. program requires the completion of coursework in educational research methodology, educational statistics, and program evaluation, engaging students in collaborative projects with faculty, and providing opportunities for professional practice.

REM M.Ed. students meet with their advisers to develop a written program of work that includes required research methodology classes and electives. Most intermediate and advanced classes in the REM program required the completion of a research proposal.

On-Campus M.Ed. Program Course Requirements

Minimum Program Requirements

Methodology Specialization (18 hours): Required REM courses +1 other course from the College of Education outside of REM
Approved Electives (12 hours): REM courses not included in required classes, methods courses outside of REM, other courses in College of Education
Experience Requirement (6 hours): Six hours of research, practicum (EDF 6941), individual study (EDF 6905), or other experience related to the student’s professional objective (EDF 6910)

Required Courses: In addition to one 3-credit graduate course within the College of Education, candidates for the M.Ed. are required to earn 15 hours from the following courses:

EDF 6403 – Quantitative Foundations of Educational Research (6 credits)

EDF 6400 – Quantitative Found of Educational Research: Overview

EDF 6402 – Quantitative Found in Educational Research: Inferential Statistics
OR
EDF 6400 – Quantitative Found of Educational Research: Overview

EDF 7405 – Advanced Quantitative Foundations of Educational Research

Electives

Elective courses may be taken in Research and Evaluation Methodology, other departments in the College of Education and departments outside the College of Education. Master’s students are required to complete at least one (3-credit hour) elective within the College of Education. Some electives may have both on-campus and online versions. There is great flexibility in the choice of electives but the choice must be approved by the student’s faculty advisor. Examples of courses students may want to consider as electives are:

Program Requirements

A bachelor’s, master’s, or terminal degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a degree deemed equivalent by the University Of Florida Office Of Admission..
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 upper-division (last 60 credits) undergraduate work.
An acceptable grade point average for previous graduate work.
All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency and meet the minimum score requirements. Details on acceptable tests and scores can be found on the UF International Center Website.
Note. GRE scores are not required for master’s programs in Research and Evaluation Methodology.
