    Catalog Description: Model and methods for formative and summative evaluation of educational products and programs.
  • EDF 6401 Educational Statistics (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Application to educational data and problems.
  • EDF 7486 Methods of Educational Research (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Examination of research methodologies. Problem identification as well as organization and presentation of data.
  • EDF 6464 Designing and Conducting Qualitative Research (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Introduces students to basic concepts and theories in qualitative research to enable them to design and conduct qualitative studies. Examples of different types of qualitative research designs and approaches are analyzed in relation to specific evaluative criteria.
  • EDF 6416 Quantitative Methods for Evaluation in Educational Environments (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Integrated coverage of advanced quantitative methods for evaluation research. A conceptual approach with an emphasis on reading and writing research results sections. Topics include missing data techniques and statistical procedures, such as linear regression, ANCOVA, logistic regression, psychometric statistical indices, and exploratory factor analysis.
  • EDF 6463 Culturally Responsive Evaluation in Educational Environments (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Theory, models, and methods applicable to the planning and implementation of culturally responsive evaluations with the recognition that evaluation takes place within cultural, social, economic, and political contexts.
  • EDF 7931 Seminar in Educational Research (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: In-depth examination of specific methodological approaches to educational research. [Currently covering topics of survey design, construction, implementation, and sampling decisions and methods—will be submitted by instructor as new course titled, “Opinion and Attitude in Evaluation Research].
  • Approved Elective (3-credits)
    Description: The student should select electives to meet individual professional goals. Elective courses may be taken within Research and Evaluation Methodology or areas outside the program with the approval of the student’s advisor.
  • EDF 6468 Evaluation Management for Grants in Educational Environments (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Coverage of the theory and tools applicable to the planning, implementing, and completing a grant-funded evaluation.
  • EDF 6492 Evaluation Communication and Ethics in Educational Environments (3-credits)
    Catalog Description: Provides a twofold emphasis: one on strategies for communicating and reporting evaluation processes and findings, and another on the understandings and applications of ethics to evaluation research.
  • EDF 6973 Project In Lieu of Thesis (1-6 credits)
    Catalog Description: Develop a comprehensive evaluation plan for a program in an educational environment. Provide strong theoretical and practical rationale for the plan and approach. Implement and conduct the evaluation and provide a final report.

    Program Evaluation – A Dynamic and Growing Field

    Program Evaluators serve the needs of leaders and decision makers in both public and private sectors, as they develop and implement policies and programs for human and social betterment.

    In this time of accountability and careful spending, decision makers depend more than ever on the work and recommendations of well-trained program evaluators to shape decisions and outcomes. In the present climate, those who work as program evaluators will have increased opportunities to assume the role of collaborator and change agent in a variety of settings.

    By using state-of-the-art research methodology and evaluation theory, the work of the evaluator enables decision makers to answer the ultimate question: “What works?”. The well-trained program evaluator knows what information needs to be collected, how to analyze and interpret empirical findings, and the best way to communicate data-based recommendations to clients or decision makers. Evaluation is a transdisciplinary profession, drawing on program theory, rhetoric, social sciences, quantitative and qualitative research methodology, and evaluation theory. Because evaluation activity crosses disciplines, the evaluator is able to provide a unique and informed perspective to guide social change and innovations. The actions and recommendations of a program evaluator often trigger and foster positive reform in policies and programs in government, schools, business, health, and social agencies both locally, nationally, and internationally.

    Program Requirements

    • bachelor’s, master’s, or terminal degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a degree deemed equivalent by the University Of Florida Office Of Admission..
    • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 upper-division (last 60 credits) undergraduate work.
    • An acceptable grade point average for previous graduate work.
    • The M.A.E. in REM does not require a GRE score.
    • All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency and meet the minimum score requirements. Details on acceptable tests and scores can be found on the UF International Center Website.
