Dr. Alyson Adams
Director for Teaching and Teacher Education
Letter from the STL Director
Welcome to the School of Teaching and Learning (STL). I’m Alyson Adams, the School Director, and I’m proud to work alongside my dedicated colleagues in STL.
Our faculty and programs have broad appeal and impact, all centered on teaching and learning. Some of us focus on PK-12 education, while others enhance learning environments for adults. Some provide practical support for educators, while others examine learning processes at a deeper level. Despite our varied approaches to research, teaching, and service, we share a commitment to excellence, collaboration, respect, professionalism, and transparency. Schools have long been shaped by change, and we welcome collaborators, colleagues, and students who seek to strengthen educational environments, support educators and leaders, and address some of education’s most pressing challenges locally, nationally, and globally.
Teaching Focus in STL
Our school offers a range of programs, from undergraduate teacher certification to doctoral studies, with areas of focus including educational technology and computer science education; science, social studies, and math education; languages and literacies; and the societal and political influences on education. Our degrees, certificates, and concentrations provide opportunities for those entering the field of education and for professionals seeking to advance their careers. We take pride in our rigorous campus-based and online programs, which have earned national recognition and awards.
Learning Focus in STL
Our faculty and students drive learning forward through extensive, well-funded research. Some of our studies focus on immediate applications, such as support for bilingual learners in biology, mathematical modeling, virtual reality for students with autism, and expanding access to computer science education. Others explore emerging learning technologies, the neurophysiology of learning, the history of gifted education, and the innovations of artificial intelligence in education. Whether advancing theory or applying research to practice, our faculty continue to shape the future of education.
We invite you to join us—as a learner, a leader, or a collaborator. Please feel free to reach out to me personally (adamsa@coe.ufl.edu, or 352-273-4107), and I will connect you with our outstanding faculty, students, and staff who can help you get started. Together, we can achieve more.
