[toggle title=”1. What grade levels will I be certified to teach? ” id=”tgl-1″] Grades 6-12 [/toggle]

[toggle title=”2. In what subject areas can I be certified?” id=”tgl-2″] Florida still uses separate subject area certification in science. Four separate certification areas are available: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth/Space science. A generic middle grades certificate is also available for those interested in teaching “general science” at the middle school level. To obtain a middle school certificate, biology, physics, and chemistry ProTeach students need to complete at least one course in astronomy, geology, oceanography, or meteorology and pass the Middle Grades Science subject area exam. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”3. Will I be eligible for certification in other states?” id=”tgl-3″] Yes. The science ProTeach program is nationally accredited, making our graduates highly marketable throughout the country. Most states recognize Florida certification without requiring any additional coursework. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”4. What are my prospects for employment?” id=”tgl-4″] Excellent. Since the inception of the secondary science ProTeach program in 1985, the science ProTeach program has had a 100% employment rate. Most science ProTeach graduates have multiple job offers. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”5. Can I attend part time? ” id=”tgl-5″] Yes and No. The science ProTeach program is a professional education program requiring a full-time commitment for consecutive fall, spring, and summer semesters. The courses in these three semester blocks must be taken together, thus part-time enrollment is not possible. Students can attend part-time while completing prerequisite or corequisite courses. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”6. Can I obtain a bachelor’s degree in science education? ” id=”tgl-6″] No. Currently, no bachelor’s degrees in science education are available. Instead, students complete an undergraduate degree in a science major and complete all of the coursework required for Florida certification in a 1-year master’s program. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”7. What undergraduate majors are eligible for the master’s program?” id=”tgl-7″] Any undergraduate major is eligible for the program as long as the required content core has been completed. Biology education specializations that include the entire content core are available from the following departments: Animal Science, Botany, Entomology, Forestry, Natural Resource Conservation, Wildlife Ecology, and Zoology. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”8. Who can I talk to about admission questions?” id=”tgl-8″] Ms. Michelle Mark in Norman 2403 handles all application files. You can contact her at (352) 273 – 4173 and at m.mark@coe.ufl.edu. You can also contact our graduate coordinator, Dr. Sevan Terzian, at sterzian@coe.ufl.edu to make an appointment to visit with him. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”9. What are the application requirements for the Secondary Science ProTeach program? ” id=”tgl-9″] A complete undergraduate transcript in a science-related field, an acceptable GRE score, and three letters of reference from college or university faculty. Application packets are available from Ms. Mark or online at the School of Teaching & Learning website. You will also want to pay careful attention to the deadlines for admission. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”10. What are the prerequisites for the program? ” id=”tgl-10″] An undergraduate degree or the equivalent of an undergraduate degree in a biological science, chemistry, or physics. Earth or space science majors are also eligible for the program, although no national accreditation is currently available. An upper division undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and acceptable scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE are also required. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”11.What if I don’t have all of the prerequisite coursework in science or education? ” id=”tgl-11″] You can still be admitted as a master’s degree student and spend your first semester or two completing program prerequisites or corequisites. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”12. Do I have to start in the Fall semester? ” id=”tgl-12″] Yes and No. The ProTeach block must be completed in consecutive fall, spring, and summer semesters. However, you may be admitted to the master’s program to complete prerequisites/corequisites in any semester. [/toggle]

[toggle title=”13. Can my GRE score be used in lieu of the Florida General Knowledge Test? ” id=”tgl-13″] Yes, but only if your GRE sub-scores meet the minimum requirements that have been set by the state of Florida. See http://www.fldoe.org/teaching/certification/general-cert-requirements/general-knowledge.stml [/toggle] [/az_toggle_section]
