Dear Summit Attendees,
We are delighted to welcome you to the University of Florida (UF) for the 2nd Social Justice Summit to be held at the J. Wayne Reitz Student Union from Friday, January 26, 2018 through Saturday, January 27, 2018. The 2018 Summit theme is “Allyship: Identify, Interact, & Impact.” The Summit agenda includes outstanding programs from community members, students, and scholars across many disciplines. We will have two keynote addresses by Dr. Zulema Valdez on Friday, January 26 and Mr. Tim Wise on Saturday, January 27.
The Summit serves as an opportunity to gather and share a space to nurture our individual and collective process of challenging systems of oppression through education and advocacy. Based on this year’s theme, we will foster discussions around an active, consistent, and arduous practice of re-evaluating our power and privilege in order to practice ways to act in solidarity with marginalized groups of people.
We hope that you find the Summit to be a safe and stimulating space where you could have the opportunity to identify and understand your intersecting privileged and oppressed identities, interact with others from diverse cultural backgrounds, and learn skills to make an impact advocating for social justice.
We are grateful to the members of the Summit Planning Committee, UF Counseling and Wellness Center, UF College of Education, and all sponsors for their generosity in making this summit possible. We hope you enjoy the programs, the people, and all that UF and the Gainesville Community has to offer. Welcome!
Drs. Zully Rivera-Ramos and Shon D. Smith
