Volunteers Needed for STEM Education
Alachua County has recently teamed up with VEX robotics to put robotics classes in all Elementary, Middle, and High Schools in the district. We are looking for Education, Engineering, and Computer Science volunteers who are interested in learning about the VEX platform, and working with children in a classroom environment. We will also be teaching basic computer programming and 3-D modeling skills to help with the students, and prepare you for any future STEM teaching opportunities. Earn $50 in Cash: Seeking students with dyslexia or reading difficulties
We are researchers in the College of Education at the University of Florida and are looking for college students with dyslexia or reading difficulties to participate in a study about learning in multimedia environments. Students may be registered with their colleges’ disability office but do not have to registered with this office. Students may have a formal diagnosis of dyslexia but do not need to have a diagnosis of dyslexia.  We will test for dyslexia.

Participation will take 1-2 hours and participants will wear an electroencephalography (EEG) headset that records brain activity during part of the study. Non-UF students will not be expected to travel to UF; UF researchers will travel to the participants’ home institution at a mutually convenient time. Participants will receive $50 in cash. Caleb’s Pitch
Caleb’s Pitch seeks a student group that is looking for a philanthropic cause. Caleb’s Pitch is a local nonprofit that is 100% volunteer driven. Our mission is to paint a positive experience for children as they battle life threatening diseases. Our signature activity is syringe art and this activity has spread to the Universities of Wisconsin and Missouri. UF Open House – Volunteers Needed 
The Office of Admissions will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, August 13 from 9am-3pm. Balance 180 has a wonderful hands-on volunteer experience available for you this summer! We are offering a summer camp for kids with special needs.

Balance 180 Summer Camp – Monday – Friday (mornings) from July 11th – July 29th.
Summer camp is a life changing experience where you have the opportunity to work with kids with special needs to help them make friends, enjoy gymnastics, dance, create arts and crafts, and play games. This camp is available for kids ages 2-15 with and without special needs (see flyer for more details). If you are interested in participating in summer camp, please contact Sarah Meurer at balance180summercamp@gmail.com. No gymnastics experience is required to volunteer and you do not need to sign up for every day, unless you want to. If you are not available in the mornings, you may be able to help out in the afternoon:) A training/orientation session is scheduled for May 22nd and July 9th, during which our team of health care professionals and educators teach you how to best work with our amazing athletes.

EDG 6931 Mobile Technologies in Education
Mobile technologies have become ubiquitous and provide access to information and learning materials for anyone, anyplace. In what ways are these technologies currently being used to teach and to learn in formal and informal environments? This course explores national and international perspectives on mobile technologies based on case studies of different ways in which mobile technologies (tablets, wearables, Google glass) are currently being used in schools, in various disciplines in higher education, and for informal learning. Students will identify common strategies used for teaching with mobile technology and how these are adapted based on socio-political, economic, and educational contexts. 3 credit online course. Balance 180 has a wonderful hands-on volunteer experience available for you this summer! We are offering a summer camp and adaptive gymnastics class for kids with special needs.

This summer, we have two opportunities to work with our athletes:
Adaptive Gymnastics Classes – Saturdays, 12:30-1:30pm from May 28th – July 30th.
Volunteers have the opportunity to work one-on-one with our young athletes, assisting them during a 1 hour gymnastics class. Disabilities include autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.  Come join us if if you are interested in helping our athletes learn new motor skills, follow directions, and being engaged in fun exercises.  If you are interested in being a part of the Adaptive Gymnastics volunteer team, please contact Matthew Zeigen at balance180adaptivegymvolunteer@gmail.com. No gymnastics experience is required to volunteer and specialized training for all volunteers on May 22nd.

Levy County School Board
We have an opening for an elementary counselor at Joyce Bullock Elementary (pk-2nd) half time and Bronson Elementary (pk-5) half time for a full time position next school year. Both are outstanding schools with supportive administration and you would be working with two experienced counselors. Williston and Bronson are only 20 minutes from Gainesville so it might be easier to drive there than across town in Gainesville. HBR4930– Harry Potter and the Holocaust: Children Literature and Alternative Ways of Talking about Racism and Genocide
This course addresses the representation of the Holocaust in popular culture and in children books that discuss the Holocaust directly (as in Anne Frank) and ones that address indirectly violence, scapegoating and human cruelty (as in Lord of the Flies). The discussion also encompasses the politics of the Holocaust and what the memory of the Holocaust might mean to different groups and individuals. The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution. Course offered M T W R F during Period 3.

The University of Florida Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB) is now accepting applications. Comprised of six faculty/staff and 12 students, SHAB provides UF’s Senior Vice President for Health Affairs advice concerning policies and procedures of the Student Health Care Center (SHCC). SHAB regularly reviews the quality of care rendered at the SHCC, as well as recommending and approving policies, procedures, programs, financial status and both long- and short-range planning.

The 9th Annual EHS STAR Autism Awareness 5K will be held on Saturday, April 30 at Boulware Springs Nature Park in Gainesville. Online registration is $15 and on-site registration is $20. O2B a Kid Again FUNdraiser
Please join us for our annual O2B a Kid Again FUNdraiser benefitting the Education Foundation of Alachua County on Sunday, May 1 from 5-8pm! Proceeds from the party help support teacher and school grants, and teacher recognition programs. Tickets are just $12.50 each for ACPS employees and their guests. $25 for the general public. Tickets are on sale with a designated O2B fun counselor at each school or our contact information is below.

This year’s party at O2B Kids on Newberry Road will feature a BBQ supper and fun food from Bono’s, Dominos, Sonic, Rotary Foundation Fryers, and Subway with additional surprise treats, and adult beverages, soda and tea.

O2B staff will be hosting some fabulous games and activities some with one of a kind trophies! Nashville Recording Artist JAMIE DAVIS will be entertaining us in the
backyard. Gators Dockside will host a Wing eating contest at 6:00pm. The principal’s event will be at 6:45pm and will be fun! It’s for all the MARBLES and a cash prize for your school. Corks and Colors will be doing fun art projects in the art room.

We will have our fabulous silent auction with hundreds of wonderful items including theme park tickets, artwork, restaurant gift cards, summer camps, tickets to fun events AND MORE!  Silent auction closes at 7:15pm and the line for payment will open sometime after 7:30pm… so plan to stick around for Jamie’s second set.

Upward Bound is looking for Educators!   
The Upward Bound Program is an educational program housed at Santa Fe College and funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  Upward Bound provides opportunities for high school participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.  We serve: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

I am looking for a responsible college student or students to provide safe and reliable transportation for my 15 yr old daughter from May 2 thru June 10. I will need someone to be available to provide transportation on Wednesdays and Fridays between 3 and 5 pm as well as occasional Mondays and Thursdays during this time. Beginning on June 13 through the rest of the summer, I will need someone to be available on Monday and Wednesday mornings between 8-9:30 and Wednesday and Friday afternoons between 3:00 and 4:00. Looking for a tutor that has the educational skills and patience to tutor my 12 yr. old 6th grade daughter in the subjects of math, science and Social Studies. Introduction to Arduinos – April 14, 2-3pm
Held in Marston Science Library L136
Space is limited to 10 participants – register at http://apps.uflib.ufl.edu/Registration

Arduinos are open-source microcontrollers that allow you to connect sensors to create interactive projects.  This workshop introduces participants to prototyping and basic programming using Arduinos to create a light-sensitive alarm.  No prior experience with either Arduinos or programming is necessary.

Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies 
Position available for one or two advanced undergraduate or graduate students to enter data for Embedded Instruction California, an outreach project to adapt, pilot, and evaluate professional development on strategies for embedding instruction for young children with disabilities in typical routines and activities in early childhood classrooms. Data entry may involve documents or video. Knowledge of EXCEL™, attention to detail, reliability, flexibility, and maintaining confidentiality are important qualifications. The position is a short-term, hourly position that is available immediately and may include the summer semester. A minimum of 10 hours per week is preferred. Students will be paid $10-$12/hour, depending on experience. The position includes a brief orientation and training and ongoing supervision by a project coordinator. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in professional development, coaching, or instructional approaches in early childhood and would like to gain experience in research. Please join the College of Education’s Food Drive benefiting the Field and Fork Campus Food Program! Field and Fork Mission: The Field and Fork Campus Food Program is a collaboration to create awareness about food insecurity and sustainable food practices. The course will compare the treatment of the holocaust, racism and genocide in books such as Night, The Diary of Anne-Frank and Maus: A Survivor’s Tale with a more general discussion of violence and racism in books such as The Wave, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (as well as Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.”) The main texts for this course will be two books out of the Harry Potter series (The Goblet of Fire and The Deathly Hallows), a series which has been intended for children, and which makes almost no mention of historical events and identity while speaking of purity of blood, racial violence and (eventually) state-run racial persecution. Course offered M T W R F during Period 3.

I am seeking an experienced, responsible, fun part time babysitter for 2 girls ages 7 and 10 for 2 days a week. Hours would be Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:45pm to 6pm and would be at my house in the southwest Tower Road part of town.  Pay would be $12 an hour.  Duties would include help with afternoon homework, and keeping the girls entertained till their father gets home from work.  Job would start immediately and would be a permanent weekly job. Yoga 4 Youth: Mindful Milestones, Milestones in the Making, Inc
Brianna Schiavoni has a BA in psychology and a Masters in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) working with children managing chronic conditions like AD/HD, anxiety and diabetes. In collaboration with her mother (Ed.S) and Lisa Schiavoni’s longstanding private practice: Milestones in the Making, Inc; Brianna has launched a series of innovative and affordable mental health services programs in Gainesville. Yoga 4 Youth initiatives offer therapeutic yoga as an affordable means to mental health and wellness. Participants enjoy yoga-based activities and games that build skills in a range of areas, including: attention, self-regulation, social skills, motor skills, language & communication, self-esteem & body-image.

In order to maintain low cost, the program is looking for university volunteers to act as behavioral supports during these classes. Volunteers will receive personalized training in behavioral modalities and oversight by a licensed professional. Position expectations range from 3-15 hours per month; and require a commitment of >1 academic semester. Some yoga experience is desirable. We focus on using UF students to better their afterschool and summer programs by providing tutors and support for the children to learn and grow in a safe environment. Following internship completion there could be opportunities to be employed by Boys and Girls Club and advance to the local and national level.

ECC Elections – deadline April 6th
The Education College Council (ECC) has extended the deadline to submit nominations for the 2016-2017 treasurer. We will be accepting nominations for those interested in serving as treasurer through Wednesday, April 6th. If you would like to play an active role in the direction of the College of Education’s student life, please consider nominating yourself for this exciting position!  Submit your nomination here.

Applications for 2016-2017 SAGE leadership are now being accepted!
SAGE is a great way to serve the College of Education community and add to the service component of your professional persona. Serving as a SAGE officer enables you to create and engage in relevant professional development activities and fun social opportunities with your colleagues. SAGE will be accepting applications through April 1st. The method for choosing officers will be determined based on interest. If multiple people apply for a position, a vote will be held on the SAGE Facebook page. Nominees will have the opportunity to accept or deny the position upon election. Apply here. EVENTS

Research Symposium – Thursday, March 31st
ECC and SAGE will be hosting the first annual College of Education Research Symposium on Thursday, March 31st. The symposium will feature two poster sessions and a lively roundtable session. In addition to the research sessions, we will hold concurrent workshops on the academic job search and CV improvement. Registration for the event will begin at 2:30pm in the Terrace Room and poster sessions begin at 3:00pm. All students and faculty are welcome to attend and do not need to pre-register, but programs will be available in the Terrace Room for anyone interested in attending. We will hold a reception at 5:30pm outside Norman Auditorium and our keynote speaker, Dr. Benjamin Justice, will speak on “The Hidden Curriculum of Justice: How the American Criminal Justice System Educates, and Miseducates, Citizens” from 6:00-7:00pm in the auditorium. The Academic Job Search and Negotiating an Academic Job Offer at the COE Research Symposium
ECC and SAGE will host a panel discussion on March 31st from 3-4pm in Norman 2329 on The Academic Job Search. Panelists include Dr. Thomasenia Adams, Dr. Danling Fu, Dr. Katie Caprino, Mr. Matthew Cowley, and Dr. Angela Kohnen. Panelists will speak on compiling job documents, the job talk, attire and etiquette, and other essential topics relevant to the job search. A separate mini-panel discussion will take place between 5:00-5:30pm the same day and place on negotiating a job offer. Disability Across Cultures: An Intersectional View – Tuesday, April 5th
This engaging and interactive panel will consist of multiple students from various cultural backgrounds discussing topics related to their disability. Food and refreshments will be provided. Take Back the Night: A March and Rally to End Sexual Violence
Join UF’s STRIVE (Sexual Trauma and Interpersonal Violence) as we Take Back the Night to demonstrate our support for sexual violence survivors, share our stories, and create a culture of care. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 6 at 6pm in the Plaza of Americas. It involves a 1-mile march around campus that ends with an open mic.
