2015 FATE Conference – The 21st Century Educator: iTeach, iLead, iResearch
The Florida Association of Teacher Educators is excited to announce that the 2015 FATE conference will be taking place in Gainesville, Florida. This two-day conference will be held at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center. We hope you will consider submitting a proposal by June 1st. 2015 Board of Education (BOE) Summer Fellowship Program — June 24-August 7, 2015
This six-week summer program sponsored by the Office of Graduate Minority Programs (OGMP) is designed as an orientation to graduate education and promotes acclimation to the University of Florida. The goal of this program is to provide newly enrolled doctoral students with the groundwork for their graduate education by: (1) supplementing the student’s knowledge of the research process; (2) honing their research writing skills and (3) easing the transition into graduate level studies at the University of Florida. Mid-South Educational Research Association (MSERA) Annual Meeting
Florida is now a member state of the Mid-South Educational Research Association (MSERA). The association is a nonprofit incorporated educational organization whose purposes are to encourage quality educational research in the Mid-South and to promote the application of the results of quality educational research in the schools. Member states include: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Please join the MSERA in Lafayette, LA for our annual meeting schedule for November 4-6, 2015. They are currently accepting proposals for the meeting and urge you to consider submitting. Conference proposals are due by July 15th. Please consider sharing your work at a discussion or display session, teaming up with colleagues for a symposium, providing training, and encouraging yoru students to present at a Research in Progress (RIP) Session.   • EDF 6403: Research Course will be offered this summer. It is the six-credit required research course for all COE doctoral students. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to focus the summer on research and on fulfilling all research course requirements.   • EDG 6931: Schools, Teachers, and the Marginalization of Students (Summer C, Wednesday, Periods 4-6) – In this new doctoral seminar, we will examine how school and teacher policies and practices disproportionately place certain student groups on society’s margins and limit their life chances. The University of Florida Center for Precollegiate Education and Training (CPET) is seeking summer residential counselors for the following: 1. Male and female counselors for week-long high school summer academic programs, including Humanities and the Sunshine State, Science Quest (two sessions), and STEAM Quest. Counselors will be hired for the entire summer and work with all programs. and 2. Male counselors for the 57th Annual Student Science Training Program (SSTP). Our family is looking for a nanny between now and the start of the next school year to care for our 2-year-old son at our home in the mornings, 8am-1pm. They also love Lego’s, imaginative games and scavenger hunts.Occasionally, we ask for your help with a load of kids laundry and we ask that our home be picked up at the end of the day. We are a laid-back family so ask any question and feel free to chat with us about anything. Please be comfortable with pets and have experience as a nanny as well as experience providing transportation for children.

Doctoral Dissertation Funding: FAMILY STRENGTHENING SCHOLARS GRANT
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) in the Administration for Children and Families intends to award up to three grants to support dissertation research on healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood policy issues (HMRF). These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to focus research on questions that have direct implications for HMRF policy decision-making and program administration, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. These grants are intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved/understudied populations (e.g., low-income families, minority populations), utilize rigorous research methodology (both primary data collection and secondary data analysis), and help inform the development of future intervention research. Applicants may apply for project periods up to 24 months with two 12-month budget periods.  Up to $25,000 may be awarded for each budget period.  Letters of intent are due by May 8, 2015 and applications are due by June 8, 2015.

4th Annual Book Drive
The UF Libraries are holding our 4th Annual Spring Book Drive. Were you thinking of giving your office/lab a good spring cleaning before summer started? If you have books you no longer use, you could achieve several good things by donating them to the book drive.

  1. Add to the UF Libraries’ collections (if the books are selected for retention)
  2. Support sustainability by reusing/recycling the books
  3. De-clutter your personal space

Collection boxes will be in all the main branches (Library West, Smathers/Library East, Marston Science, Health Science, Education, Architecture and Fine Arts, and the Legal Information Center) in the lobbies or near the information desk. The collection runs from April 20th thru May 1st, 2015. You can drop off your donation at any time during normal operating hours. 2015 Board of Education (BOE) Summer Fellowship Program — June 24-August 7, 2015
This six-week summer program sponsored by the Office of Graduate Minority Programs (OGMP) is designed as an orientation to graduate education and promotes acclimation to the University of Florida. The goal of this program is to provide newly enrolled doctoral students with the groundwork for their graduate education by: (1) supplementing the student’s knowledge of the research process; (2) honing their research writing skills and (3) easing the transition into graduate level studies at the University of Florida. Doctoral Dissertation Funding: FAMILY STRENGTHENING SCHOLARS GRANT
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) in the Administration for Children and Families intends to award up to three grants to support dissertation research on healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood policy issues (HMRF). These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to focus research on questions that have direct implications for HMRF policy decision-making and program administration, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. These grants are intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved/understudied populations (e.g., low-income families, minority populations), utilize rigorous research methodology (both primary data collection and secondary data analysis), and help inform the development of future intervention research. Applicants may apply for project periods up to 24 months with two 12-month budget periods.  Up to $25,000 may be awarded for each budget period.  Letters of intent are due by May 8, 2015 and applications are due by June 8, 2015.

  • EDF 6403: Research Course will be offered this summer. It is the six-credit required research course for all COE doctoral students. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to focus the summer on research and on fulfilling all research course requirements.   • EDG 6931: Schools, Teachers, and the Marginalization of Students (Summer C, Wednesday, Periods 4-6) – In this new doctoral seminar, we will examine how school and teacher policies and practices disproportionately place certain student groups on society’s margins and limit their life chances. Summer Residential Counselor Opportunities
The University of Florida Center for Precollegiate Education and Training (CPET) is seeking summer residential counselors for the following: 1. Male and female counselors for week-long high school summer academic programs, including Humanities and the Sunshine State, Science Quest (two sessions), and STEAM Quest. Counselors will be hired for the entire summer and work with all programs. and 2. Male counselors for the 57th Annual Student Science Training Program (SSTP). Volunteers Needed for annual Partner Family Banquet – May 19th
Partnership for Strong Families will be hosting our annual Partner Family Banquet for our current foster (or as we call them, partner) families at the Santa Fe River Ranch. Our foster parents are invited to bring their children (both biological and foster) out for a night of fun for the kids and dinner and entertainment for the parents. To show our parents our appreciation for everything they do for us and our community’s children in out-of-home care, we will be offering childcare offsite at the Hal Brady Recreation Complex (located at 14300 NW 146th Terrace, Alachua FL 32615) for children 4-11 years old. We are looking for volunteers to come out to the Recreation Complex from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to help us supervise the children. In addition to providing them dinner, we will have three bounce houses, carnival games, and crafts to keep the children busy. Currently we are expecting to have approximately 90 children in attendance and would love to have at least 15 volunteers help us out. Join Sustainable UF for Collection Day! – Wednesday, April 22nd from 7am-1pm
Let Sustainable UF help you ‘green’ your spring cleaning at the annual Collection Day event. This initative provides an easy, fast and convenient way for students, faculty, staff, and UFHealth employees to donate household items for use in the community, and provides a safe way to get rid of hazardous and electronic waste for proper recycling or disposal. THATCamp Gainesville: The Humanities and Technology Camp – Friday, April 24th
The UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere with the Smathers Libraries are hosting The Humanities and Technology Camp (THATCamp) in Gainesville on April 24, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in Smathers Library, room 100. Digital technologies have created new and exciting opportunities to teach people about history, culture, art, music and literature, among other humanities fields. THATCamp is a free “unconference” where researchers, teachers, students, developers, librarians, museum professionals and others can discuss digital projects, learn and teach each other new programs and skills and brainstorm initiatives to support cultural work in the digital age. Session topics are proposed by the participants before the Camp and the conference schedule is created by the group together on the first morning. Line Dance Lessons
Are you feeling stressed during these last weeks of the semester? There are only two line dance classes left (4/28, 5/5)! Come join us from 5:30-6:30pm and learn dances to a variety of music such as Uptown Funk, Lady GaGa, Colt Ford, Taylor Swift, and Big & Rich to name a few! We will meet in 1327A and move to the Terrace Room if we have a large group. No experience required and all are welcome. You don’t need to wear cowboy boots, but you are welcome to wear them if you choose. Dress comfortably, wear shoes you can move in, and be sure to bring water. There is no set charge; however, I request a suggested $5 donation per class to help raise money for a mission trip to Uganda this summer to build a home for abandoned babies and work with children in an orphanage. These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to focus research on questions that have direct implications for HMRF policy decision-making and program administration, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. These grants are intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved/understudied populations (e.g., low-income families, minority populations), utilize rigorous research methodology (both primary data collection and secondary data analysis), and help inform the development of future intervention research. Applicants may apply for project periods up to 24 months with two 12-month budget periods.  Up to $25,000 may be awarded for each budget period.  Letters of intent are due by May 8, 2015 and applications are due by June 8, 2015.

  • EDF 6403: Research Course will be offered this summer. It is the six-credit required research course for all COE doctoral students. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to focus the summer on research and on fulfilling all research course requirements. Volunteers Needed for annual Partner Family Banquet – May 19th
Partnership for Strong Families will be hosting our annual Partner Family Banquet for our current foster (or as we call them, partner) families at the Santa Fe River Ranch. Our foster parents are invited to bring their children (both biological and foster) out for a night of fun for the kids and dinner and entertainment for the parents. To show our parents our appreciation for everything they do for us and our community’s children in out-of-home care, we will be offering childcare offsite at the Hal Brady Recreation Complex (located at 14300 NW 146th Terrace, Alachua FL 32615) for children 4-11 years old. We are looking for volunteers to come out to the Recreation Complex from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to help us supervise the children. Constructing the Island of the Blue Dolphins’ Archive: A talk by Dr. Sara Schwebel
Monday, April 20, 4 p.m. in the Judaica Suite, located on the 2nd floor of Smathers Library (East), Dr. Schwebel will discuss her most current project, a digital archive of materials related to Scott O’Dell’s Newbery award-winning children’s book Island of the Blue Dolphins, and how it relates to nature, historical narratives, and colonialism. The archive will be released in 2016 alongside the first-ever critical edition of Island of the Blue Dolphins.  Sara Schwebel holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is an Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina. She teaches children’s, young adult, and American literature. She is the author of Child-Sized History: Fictions of the Past in U.S. Classrooms and a number of academic articles about children’s historical fiction and history pedagogy.

This event is co-sponsored by the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature (George A. Smathers Libraries), the Center for Children’s Literature and Culture, and the Department of English as part of the Baldwin Library’s Annual Speaker Series.

The UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere with the Smathers Libraries are hosting The Humanities and Technology Camp (THATCamp) in Gainesville on April 24, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in Smathers Library, room 100. Digital technologies have created new and exciting opportunities to teach people about history, culture, art, music and literature, among other humanities fields. Line Dance Lessons
Have you always wanted to learn to line dance? Now’s the time to start! Join me from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays in the Terrace Room starting Tuesday, March 31. We will meet every Tuesday through the end of April, except for Tuesday the 14th because the Terrace Room is not available that day…unless we can find an alternative location. If you can’t make it every week, that is okay too; come when you can. No experience required and all are welcome. You don’t need to wear cowboy boots, but you are welcome to wear them if you choose. We will learn line dances to a variety of music. TONIGHT!!-Education Career Night – Wednesday, April 8th
Teaching isn’t the only profession you’ll hear about if you attend UF’s College of Education Career Night on Wednesday, April 8th. From 4-5 pm, in the Reitz Union Auditorium, there will be a panel of four dynamic College of Education alumni offering career advice and discussing the distinctly different career paths they each have followed—quite successfully—after earning their education degrees at UF. This panel is open to everyone!

MASH: Mathematics→Art←Science at the Harn-Thursday, April 16th

The Harn Museum of Art and the UF Science for Life Program, in collaboration with the Office of Research, and the Colleges of Agricultural & Life Sciences, Health & Human Performance, and Liberal Arts & Sciences are hosting the first MASH Museum Night. In addition to the exhibits and performances by mathematics and science faculty, staff, and students MASH will include a food buffet, hands-on activities for children, and fun mathematics/art/science trivia competitions. All are welcome to attend. The event is from 6-9 p.m.

Line Dance Lessons
Have you always wanted to learn to line dance? Now’s the time to start! Join me from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays in the Terrace Room starting Tuesday, March 31. We will meet every Tuesday through the end of April, except for Tuesday the 14th because the Terrace Room is not available that day…unless we can find an alternative location. If you can’t make it every week, that is okay too; come when you can. No experience required and all are welcome. You don’t need to wear cowboy boots, but you are welcome to wear them if you choose. With the stress of the semester piling up and deadlines looming at every turn, the UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to other students about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center’s home page at www.counseling.ufl.edu where you can click on the “Worried about a Friend” link, or at http://counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/kognito-for-students?mID=186. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes 30 minutes. Summer Camp Volunteers Needed
Balance 180 Gymnastics & Sports Academy is a local non-profit organization that focuses on integrating children with varying abilities through sports. This summer, we are running our third annual summer camp, and need volunteers that are excited to work with children with special needs! Summer camp is a great learning experience for student volunteers. All of our volunteers work 1-1 or 2-1 with the participating campers in a wide range of activities including gymnastics, crafts, and games. The athletes have a range of disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and Cerebral Palsy among others. Camp will be offered July 13 – July 31, Monday – Friday, from 8am-5pm. Volunteers do not need to commit to the entire three weeks or all day, however, we do ask that volunteers sign up in advance for the days they are available and indicate either morning (8am-12:30pm) or afternoon (12:30pm-5pm) shifts. Line Dance Lessons
Have you always wanted to learn to line dance? Now’s the time to start! Join me from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays in the Terrace Room starting Tuesday, March 31. We will meet every Tuesday through the end of April, except for Tuesday the 14th because the Terrace Room is not available that day…unless we can find an alternative location. If you can’t make it every week, that is okay too; come when you can. No experience required and all are welcome. You don’t need to wear cowboy boots, but you are welcome to wear them if you choose. We will learn line dances to a variety of music. Dress comfortably, wear shoes you can move in, and be sure to bring water.  There is no set charge; however, I request a suggested $5 donation per class to help raise money for a mission trip to Uganda this summer to build a home for abandoned babies and work with children in an orphanage.  Line dancing is lots of fun and a great stress reliever for the end of the academic year. With the stress of the semester piling up and deadlines looming at every turn, the UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to other students about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center’s home page at www.counseling.ufl.edu where you can click on the “Worried about a Friend” link, or at http://counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/kognito-for-students?mID=186. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes 30 minutes. With the stress of the semester piling up and deadlines looming at every turn, the UF Counseling and Wellness Center would like to highlight Kognito, an online resource to help students learn to recognize signs of stress and realistically practice talking to other students about it, with the goal of connecting them with support on campus. UF students are able to do this for FREE through the Counseling and Wellness Center’s home page at www.counseling.ufl.edu where you can click on the “Worried about a Friend” link, or at http://counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/kognito-for-students?mID=186. This experience is done at each person’s convenience, and only takes 30 minutes. This gives YOU the chance to develop an invaluable set of skills to help friends in distress and, quite possibly, to help prevent suicide. 10th Annual SAGE Symposium:  Proposals due March 31st

Summer Camp Volunteers Needed
Balance 180 Gymnastics & Sports Academy is a local non-profit organization that focuses on integrating children with varying abilities through sports. This summer, we are running our third annual summer camp, and need volunteers that are excited to work with children with special needs! Summer camp is a great learning experience for student volunteers. All of our volunteers work 1-1 or 2-1 with the participating campers in a wide range of activities including gymnastics, crafts, and games. The athletes have a range of disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and Cerebral Palsy among others. Camp will be offered from July 13 to July 31 and will be held Monday – Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM. Volunteers do not need to commit to the entire three week or all day, however, we do ask that volunteers sign up in advance for the days they are available and indicate either morning (8AM – 12:30pm) or afternoon (12:30pm-5pm) shifts.  We are so excited to be offering an inclusive camp again this summer for children in the Gainesville community! Informational Meeting – Education College Council
On Thursday, March 19th at 4:00 PM in the Terrace Room, we will be holding an informational meeting regarding the Education College Council (ECC) and the upcoming nomination and election period for the 2015-2016 academic year.  In recent years, the ECC has served largely as an undergraduate organization.  We are in the process of reorganizing the ECC as an umbrella organization for the entire college, serving both graduate and undergraduate students for the purpose of:

  1. Providing leadership for the students and student organizations of the College of Education.
  2. To serve as a liaison between the student organizations of the College of Education and the Student Government of the University of Florida.
  3. Support and promote the clubs/organizations of the College of Education
  4. Provide programs of interest and relevance to the student body of the College of Education
  5. Promote communication between the faculty, staff and students of the College of Education

To begin this process, we are holding an organizational meeting.  We would like students interested in leadership positions from across the college, and representatives from the different student organizations that currently operate in the college, to attend this meeting. The UFTeach Student Organization is having a panel presentation on Thursday, March 19th from 6:00-7:00pm in Norman 174. The panel will be comprised of 4-6 UFTeach graduates that are currently employed in ACPS and other districts in Florida. The participants will share information about their teaching assignment, if the UFTeach program was helpful in preparing them for their own classroom and answer questions that the students might have.

Women’s History Month is proud to present: Women with Disabilities – Friday, March 20th
This event will begin with a tabling fair from 6:00-6:30pm. Student organizations pertaining to disabilities will be present, along with representatives from the Disability Resource Center and Disabilities in Society Minor. Following, Dr. Jeanne Repetto and Susan Horky from Shands will give a brief discussion regarding disabilities. Dr. Repetto, Susan Horky, and Jenna Gonzalez started a graduate certificate program at the College of Education based on health care and education transition for students with disabilities. We’ll wrap up the night with a panel of women with disabilities. Topics include the stigma surrounding mental illness, stereotypes, discrimination, disability advocacy and awareness, and much more! Facilitators Needed for LeadUF Leadership Conference
LeadUF is a two-day overnight retreat giving you a chance to learn and practice leadership in the context of working with others. FREE GRE WORKSHOP
The UF Teaching Center offers this workshop to help students prepare for the GRE exam on Monday – Thursday, March 30th – April 2nd, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. each day. The Verbal sessions will take place on Monday and Tuesday, and the Math sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. Pablo de Olavide Summer Camp Counselors (Spain)
Pablo de Olavide University is pleased to announce a 3-week summer internship for students interested in working with children in Seville, Spain. We are looking for motivated students with an intermediate level of Spanish to work with Spanish children aged 3-5 or with children aged 6-14 during a 3-week period (June 22-July 10) at a summer camp on Pablo de Olavide University’s campus in Seville. Although the internship is not paid, it will include a free 22-hour upper intermediate Spanish grammar course (1.5 U.S. credits) at the University’s International Center and access to the Center’s social/cultural activities. Following the morning Spanish grammar class, the student will spend a minimum of 2-hours daily helping the camp staff with activities, games, etc. in English. In addition to the transcript for the 22-hour Spanish grammar course, students will receive a certificate from the director of the UPO Sports Department who oversees the summer camp.This opportunity is limited to 4 native English speakers and will include a Skype interview as part of the selection process. He is currently working above grade level but recently since this new curriculum he has been having a bit of a struggle with the reading comprehension portion. Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County (Northwest Location) is currently looking for College of Education volunteers to work with some of our kids that are below the reading grade level. We are very limited to staff and we do not have the resources to work one-on-one with every student that needs help. We also have some students that cannot read at all and are looking for some individuals that would like to do some intensive tutoring and help develop their basic reading skills. Environmental Education Workshop – Saturday, March 14th from 9am-3:30pm
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is partnering with Fire in Southern Ecosystems (FISE) to offer a workshop at the Austin Cary Forest Learning Center for undergraduate and graduate students and educators in the Gainesville area. Participants will receive FISE curriculum materials, become a certified PLT educator, and receive a PLT PreK-8 guide with 96 hands-on activities. Workshop fee: $5. 3rd Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference – Call For Papers – Submission Deadline Sunday, March 15th
The Black Doctoral Network Conference Committee is inviting abstract submissions for the 2015 conference themed “Paying It Forward: Transforming Research into Practice.” The conference will be an interdisciplinary event that brings together academics and professionals from the social sciences, STEM, and humanities to address how we can positively impact and inform each other’s work and engage with our communities. Submission of abstracts from graduate and doctoral students, recent Ph.D. graduates and academic professionals across disciplines are welcome. Facilitators Needed for LeadUF Leadership Conference
LeadUF is a two-day overnight retreat giving you a chance to learn and practice leadership in the context of working with others. This conference was created 100% by University of Florida faculty and staff, based on their personal experiences in campus leadership. Being a LeadUF facilitator is a great way to connect with student leaders, other UF faculty and staff, and to practice your own facilitation and leadership skills. Facilitators must be graduate students, staff or faculty. Deadline for facilitator applications: Friday, March 20th. Education Career Night – Wednesday, April 8th
Teaching isn’t the only profession you’ll hear about if you attend UF’s College of Education Career Night on Wednesday, April 8th, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the Reitz Union Auditorium (open to everyone!) . A panel of four dynamic College of Education alumni will offer career advice and talk about the distinctly different career paths they each have followed—quite successfully—after earning their education degrees at UF. Following the Career Panel, UF’s award winning Career Resource Center is hosting “Careers in Education” Career Fair from 5 – 7:30 p.m. next door, in the Reitz Union Ballroom.

Northeast Florida Education Career Fair
North East Florida Education Consortium will be holding its annual Education Career Fair on Monday, April 20th at the Best Western Gateway Grand in Gainesville, Florida. District and school based administrators from eight school districts in northeast Florida will be present to meet with and interview teacher candidates. Summer Research Course Announcement
EDF 6403 will be offered this summer. It is the six-credit required research course for all COE doctoral students. This is a great opportunity for doctoral students to focus the summer on research and on fulfilling all research course requirements. Pablo de Olavide Summer Camp Counselors (Spain)
Pablo de Olavide University is pleased to announce a 3 week summer internship for students interested in working with children in Seville, Spain. We are looking for motivated students with an intermediate level of Spanish to work with Spanish children aged 3-5 or with children aged 6-14 during a 3 week period (June 22-July 10, 2015) at a summer camp which takes place on Pablo de Olavide University’s campus in Seville.
Although the internship in not paid, it will include a free 22 hour upper intermediate Spanish grammar course (1.5 U.S. credits) at the University’s International Center and access to the Center’s social/cultural activities. Following the morning Spanish grammar class, the student will spend a minimum of 2 hours daily helping the camp staff with activities, games, etc. in English. In addition to the transcript for the 22 hour Spanish grammar course, students will receive a certificate from the director of the UPO Sports Department who oversees the summer camp.This opportunity is limited to 4 native English speakers and will include a Skype interview as part of the selection process.
