Webinar: “Celebrating Pride: A Conversation with Nancy Kates on Brother Outsider”

June 13, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

- Free

In this webinar, we will discuss how to use the documentary to explore Bayard Rustin’s identity as a gay man of color trying to affect change in the twentieth century, his work as the organizer of the March on Washington, and his legacy in the civil rights movement today. Brother Outsider, now streaming from facinghistory.org (log in required to view the video), offers a unique window into the historical time period in which Rustin lived and worked.

In this webinar, we will examine teaching ideas that:

  • Explore the possible reasons why Rustin’s story is less well known than other civil rights leaders

  • Provide valuable historical context to Rustin’s story

  • Consider what clips of Brother Outsider might be useful in a classroom setting

This webinar is from 3–4pm ET. If this time does not work for your schedule, be sure to register and we’ll let you know when the recording is posted in our On-Demand Learning Center.
