Hosted at the 14th International Conference on Design, User Experience and Usability, as part of 27th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, 22-27 June 2025 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
We are pleased to announce a call for submissions for a parallel session at HCII 2025 on the subject area of “AI for Enabling Technologies”. The session aims at exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming the landscape of enabling technologies across a range of sectors and environments. It seeks to highlight cutting-edge research, applications, and innovations where AI plays a pivotal role in enhancing, optimizing, or revolutionizing technologies that empower individuals, industries, and communities.
We are interested in research that is driving innovation, informing practice and policy, and ideally engaging end users in their design. Importantly, we are focused on enabling technologies and the role they play on/in the lives of marginalized groups. Here, marginalized groups refer to communities or populations that experience discrimination, exclusion, or disadvantage due to societal, political, economic, or cultural factors, including (but not limited to): racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities (physical, cognitive, developmental, sensory), women and gender minorities, low-income and economically disadvantaged individuals, neurodivergent groups, indigenous peoples and native populations, unhoused or homeless populations.
In the context of marginalized groups, we are excited to invite submissions from a diverse range of disciplines and perspectives, including but not limited to:
- AI-driven Assistive Technologies: AI applications in healthcare, mobility, communication, and daily living aids.
- Smart Systems and IoT: AI for smart devices, home automation, and the Internet of Things, particularly focusing on enhancing accessibility and usability.
- AI in Education: Tools and platforms leveraging AI to improve learning experiences, personalized education, and accessibility for diverse learners.
- Human-Machine Interaction: AI-enhanced interfaces that improve human interaction with machines and digital environments.
- AI in Healthcare: Innovations in AI for medical devices, diagnostics, telemedicine, and personalized healthcare solutions.
- AI for Accessibility: Development of AI models and systems designed to break down barriers in communication, work, and social environments for underserved populations.
- Ethics and Policy: Discussions on the ethical, societal, and policy implications of AI in enabling technologies, including concerns about inclusivity, fairness, and data privacy.
Submission Guidelines
We welcome original research articles, reviews, case studies, and opinion pieces. Submissions should be aligned with the theme of AI as a key enabler in technological innovation and accessibility. This may also include ways AI is, or can be, integrated with other technologies (i.e. virtual reality).
We welcome extended abstract of 800-1000 words, excluding references. Note that submissions are by invite.
All submissions will be reviewed by the Session Chairs and accepted authors will be notified of a decision to submit a full paper. Full papers are typically 12 pages long, but no less than 10 and no more than 20 pages.
HOW REQUEST AN INVITE
To request an invite, please contact Dr Marc Fabri (m.fabri@leedsbeckett.ac.uk) with brief details of your work, who will give you access to the submission system. Please do not submit your abstract through the general conference submission route.
