OBJECTIVE
To support engaging science education by capitalizing on the interest around limited IIHS video assets.
The Challenge
In 2017, the internationally-recognized Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) approached the college’s faculty and e-learning team to partner in the creation of a middle and high school lesson repository built around math and science standards. The challenge was to pull together a vast array of car crash videos and data housed at the institute to create an educational website that applies physics and biology concepts to the real world of cars and car crashes. The real challenge, get kids interested in physics.
The Solution
We collaborated with the IIHS to create the new site, which includes two films and 11 classroom activities. The activities, which align with Next Generation Science Standards, focus on topics such as inertia, momentum, impulse and energy and include content for students and password-protected teacher resources, including lesson plans and answer keys.
We provided front-end website design, back-end website development, videography, photography and instructional design. The result was a dynamic web-based archive of video and other lesson resources that may be accessed by any teacher or student—free of charge. These video-based lessons lead by Griff Jones, emeritus clinical associate professor, are immensely popular and exciting demonstrations of physics concepts. The website aims to reinforce important physics and biology concepts while providing students the knowledge to make safe decisions while riding in or driving a vehicle.
