Dean’s End of Year Remarks for the 2024-2025 Year

Associate Dean Thomasenia Adams

OER – Office of Education Research

  • Wanted to inform you of how well everyone is doing with their summer funding
  • We have been busy on the pre-award side supporting our colleagues
  • Post-awards has also been busy
  • We have grown a lot as a college as we have been focused on the pursuit of external funding
  • We hope the trend continues to go up
  • Our colleagues are very committed to submitting proposals to be considered for funding
  • This is a lot of the work we do in the pre-award office
  • We are all aware of the context happening now regarding external funding
  • Things may be changing due to decisions made by the federal government
  • OER is not afraid of that and we do not want our colleagues to be afraid of that either
  • As the landscape changes, we are going to change with it and pivot to make sure everything we do is focused on helping our colleagues be successful with external funding and consequently successful at UF
  • Many other activities that happen out of OER
  • We do a lot of outreach across the college such as attending the department of school faculty meetings
  • Host a variety of events to support faculty professional development
  • Very active in supporting the award process for faculty
  • My title is research and faculty development, the fun stuff, helping everyone be successful
  • We exist to serve faculty
  • Reach out to us with anything we can do to be supportive of you

Fiscal State of the College: Hector Silva, Director of Finance

  • We have cracked $200 million in all sources of funding
  • This is with three and a half months left in the fiscal year
  • Highlights our collective strength
  • A subset of $200 million in funds is referred to as freshwater and defined as funding sources that can be readily leveraged to pay state line faculty, staff, administration, and other infrastructure and investments
  • Discussed the reserves/carry forward that has been built-up over the last five fiscal years for freshwater funding sources
  • As the Dean mentioned we are in a relatively strong financial position as a college.
  • However, we are going to have to start thinking about the future, specifically the next 10 years
  • Discussed some of the steps the college is taking right now in preparation for the next 10 years
  • There are also some things the college is advocating for that are not entirely in our control
  • Provided some examples
  • Discussed suggested strategies within our control goals
  • We have not received any mandate or guidance whatsoever to say, expect this kind of a cut for fiscal 2026
  • However, we thought there would be value in putting down some scenarios that can help us understand how funding may be impacted and whether or not we could continue business as usual
  • Discussed the fiscal state of the college under three possible future funding scenarios

Roundtable Conversations

  • We thought we would end the full faculty portion of the meeting with some time for discussion
  • We invited some colleagues to join us and discuss three different topics
  • The plan is to discuss at each table for about 10 – 15 minutes and then rotate to the next table
  • Table 1: Teaching: K-12 Teaching in Contemporary Times: Dr. Cathy Atria, Deputy Superintendent, Alachua County Public Schools
