Recommendations for the Professional Development Leave and Sabbatical Committee Composition

Election Process for members to the Sabbatical Selection Committee and the Professional Development Leave Committee

Approved FPC, April 22, 2013
Revised FPC, February 20, 2023

The College of Education needs to amend its procedures for constituting committees to review and make recommendations on applications submitted for sabbatical and for professional development leave, in order to be in compliance with the requirements of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (2021-2024) which states:

20.6 College Committees on Sabbaticals. Each College shall have a sabbatical committee elected by and from the fulltime tenured faculty members in the College. Its primary responsibility is to assess whether proposed research plans meet the standards.

20.14 College Committees on Professional Development Program. Each college shall have professional development program committee elected by and from the fulltime faculty members in the College. Its primary responsibility is to make recommendations on proposals. A college may have a single committee for both sabbaticals and professional development leaves, provided that in considering professional development leaves there are members from that employee group.

FAC Recommendation

FAC recommends that the Sabbatical Selection Committee and the Professional Development Leave Committee merge into one committee, the Professional Development Leave and Sabbatical Committee. This 7-person committee that will consist of three full-time tenured (associate professor, professor, distinguished professor, eminent scholar), three full-time non-tenure track faculty (lecturer series, assistant-in, associate-in, senior associate in, scholar series, and any of the aforementioned ranks modified by the title clinical) and one PKY faculty member that will be advisory to the Dean.

Selection Process

To select the 6 COE members, the Director of each school will identify two full-time tenured and two full-time non-tenure track faculty to be on the ballot. Elections for this committee will happen during the FPC’s Fall election process. One full-time tenured and one full-time non-tenure track faculty member from each school will be elected.

Length of Service

During the first three years, the length of service for COE members will be staggered from one to three years. A random drawing will determine the length of service for committee members until each membership position reaches 3 years of service. Thereafter, each committee member will serve for three years.

PKY will select its one member no later than September 1, 2023 and inform the COE FPC Chair. This person will serve for three years. PKY will provide the COE FPC Chair with a new name by September 1 every 3 years thereafter.

Committee Operations

A committee chair will be selected at the first meeting. All committee members will read and discuss each application. Tenured faculty members will vote on Sabbatical and non-tenure track and PKY faculty members will vote on Professional Development Leave. The committee chair will share the committee’s vote for and discussion of each application with the Dean.
