Supplemental Information

Requested Changes to the Elementary Ed Program

CCC members:

In addition to the academic approval tracking paperwork, we would like to share the following information about requested modifications to the elementary education major. We hope that this information will provide more context for the proposals and look forward to answering questions at the meeting.

We are requesting the following:

  • The approval of 4 new courses:
    • EDG3XXX: Lesson planning and assessment for diverse learners
    • EDG3XXX: Instructional strategies for diverse learners
    • EDG3XXX: Responsive classroom management
    • EDG3XXX: School community connections
  • To modify the existing elementary ed major to make it available online in addition to the residential program. The modified program of study includes these 4 new courses
  • To offer the modified program via UF Online

This modification to the degree is designed so we can offer an apprenticeship program via UF Online. To the state DOE, an apprenticeship program, sometimes known as a “pre-bac,” is a program for upper-level undergraduates currently employed in Florida elementary schools as a paraprofessional or similar role. The program aligns academic preparation with extended classroom placements overseen by mentor teachers.

Both the existing residential option and the proposed online version meet all Florida Educator Accomplished Practices and students will graduate with professional certification in Elementary K-6 with endorsements in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Reading. A team elementary education faculty has been working for months to design a rigorous program of study for this new option. The proposals that you see here are the result of that work.

The goal is to continue to offer the existing elementary education program to residential students, while this modified major would be made available via UF Online. We see this as an opportunity to increase access to high quality teacher preparation, especially in areas that have been historically underserved.
