UF Education Professor Mary Brownell cites multiple reasons for shortage of special ed. teachers
Education Week quoted Mary Brownell, UF professor of special education, on the multi-faceted issues that are to blame for a shortage of special education teachers. She cited three factors: (1) Special education teachers say they have to teach more subjects than their colleague; (2) They don’t always feel supported by their administrator; (3) They aren’t given the time and resources they need to do their jobs well . . . Brownell also directs UF’s CEEDAR Center. CEEDAR stands for Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability and Reform, and was created by the U.S. Department of Education’s office of special education programs to strengthen teacher preparation in the field.
