John Michael Newell, Ph.D., 91, a professor emeritus of educational psychology and a 30-year member of the graduate faculty at the UF College of Education, passed away Sunday, June 11, in Gainesville. He was a longtime instructor in the Department of Foundations of Education and served as acting director of the unit for two years in 1981-1983.
Dr. Newell, who earned his doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Texas, was on faculty at UF from 1967 until his retirement in 1996. A primary research focus of his was the analysis of instructional procedures used in working with culturally disadvantaged children. He concentrated much of his time and efforts, though, to teaching, academic advisement and service, and chaired several college and university committees. In 1995, he received a Superior Accomplishment Award from the UF Division of Academic Affairs for his “exemplary work with students in the College and across campus.”
