Welcome back EduGators! Starting the week of August 29, we’ve organized a week of free and fun activities to help you ease into the 2022- 2023 academic year while building community. From Donuts with the Dean to slime making to a community clean-up, there are plenty of ways to participate in events that map to the University of Florida’s Core Values.

University Press of Florida Publicity Assistant

Description: The University Press of Florida is hiring a Publicity Assistant to join our Sales and Marketing Department. This position assists with the implementation of publicity campaigns for books published by the University Press of Florida, including helping secure book reviews and other media coverage, maintaining the Press’s author events calendar, and contributing social media content. The publicity assistant also contributes to the Press’s external communications strategy, helping communicate about the activities of the Press as a whole to a variety of audiences. The publicity assistant also performs routine clerical tasks related to the marketing and promotion of up to 90 new books per year and a backlist of more than 3,000 books and assists the sales and marketing team with a variety of tasks that increase the efficiency of the team in general. This position requires strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management. Excellent writing skills are essential.

This is a full-time position eligible for benefits including health and dental insurance and paid time off. Presence in the Gainesville area is required, though a hybrid in-person/remote work schedule is possible.

Services and Volunteer Opportunities

Balance 180 Volunteers

Description: Balance 180 is a local non-profit organization that focuses on integrating children with varying abilities through sports. Our volunteers work 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 with our athletes who have disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and cerebral palsy, among others. This is a great hands-on learning experience for student volunteers.

This Fall we have an opportunity for students to work with our athletes in the Adaptive Gymnastics Program on Saturdays from 1:00-2:00pm. This is a gymnastics class that is specifically designed for children with varying abilities. We set up the gym in rotations that include vault, bars, beam, floor, and a tumble track, so our athletes can work on a variety of motor skills. The athletes have a range of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and cerebral palsy.
How to Volunteer: If you are interested in being a part of the Adaptive Gymnastics volunteer team, please contact Elizabeth and Rebecca at AGvolunteers@balance180.org. No gymnastics experience is required to volunteer.

MentorGNV

Description: MentorGNV, a student volunteer organization at UF, will be opening its applications on August 29th, 2022. MentorGNV is a 501(c) nonprofit volunteering and community service organization that serves the Alachua County Public School system. On a weekly basis, mentors work with students from elementary to high school (in a one-on-one or group setting) through mentoring and tutoring sessions. Ultimately, our goal is to guide underserved students toward the path to success.

Notably, your experience with MentorGNV is what you make it: you can select which school to volunteer at, what grade levels to work with, and what days and times to volunteer at. That’s right— we work with your schedule, not the other way around! Plus, MentorGNV is not major-exclusive. We accept members from all majors!

Gator Junior Golf Volunteers

Description: Gator Junior Golf is a non-profit association that provides group golf lessons to kids starting at the age of 4. Volunteers can help the lead coach provide instruction, ensure that safe and etiquette golf practices are being demonstrated by the students, help set up or put away golf equipment, etc. Not only will volunteer hours be earned, those who help will be growing the game of golf and having a positive impact on our students.
How to Volunteer: The fall schedule is posted on https://gatorjuniorgolf.org/ which includes class locations and times. Some experience in golf will be useful but not necessary!
