Early Childhood Studies

The early childhood studies specialization within the UF education sciences major prepares students for meaningful careers in organizations that serve children, families and communities. With an emphasis on experiential learning, our students work with faculty actively engaged in research and community partnerships that connect coursework with real-world impact. Graduates pursue careers in education, psychology, counseling, social work, public health and other child- and family-focused professions, with many choosing to continue their studies at the graduate level.

Program Highlights

The early childhood studies specialization gives students a deeper understanding of young children’s development. You’ll explore family and community’s vital role in this process, and gain strategies to promote young children’s health, well-being and lifelong love of learning. This specialization reflects today’s priorities in early learning and child development. By exploring how early learning experiences lay the foundation for lifelong success, our students study practices that support children’s social, emotional and cognitive growth.

Our coursework covers how to:

  • Recognize the importance of early learning as a foundation for lifelong success
  • Strengthen partnerships with families and communities
  • Expand access to high-quality early learning programs
  • Understand how policy and systems shape opportunities for young children

To keep up with changes in the field, our students participate in colloquia and seminars that connect them with current issues in education and child development. They also complete a capstone experience that may include research, an internship, service learning or study abroad. These opportunities allow students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world contexts, gain professional experience, and build connections that support their future careers or graduate studies.

Support goes beyond the classroom. Our students gain an edge through access to world-class research hubs like the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies. There, groundbreaking ideas turn into real impact for children and families.
