The mathematics education graduate minor is designed for UF graduate students interested in developing expertise in math across educational contexts. Through this minor, graduate students examine research-backed teaching practices, learn how students think mathematically and how to create more accessible math classrooms.

Program Highlights

This minor is ideal for graduate students who are interested in:

  • Teaching and learning of mathematics across K–12 or postsecondary settings
  • Research-based instructional design and classroom practices in mathematics
  • Supporting student thinking, problem solving and engagement
  • Broadening their preparation for careers in education, research or teacher development

Program Requirements

UF’s on-campus master’s in mathematics education (M.A.E.) offers in-depth instruction for students seeking rigorous preparation in pedagogy and the subject matter. With 30-credit and 36-credit pathways, graduates are prepared to teach at the community college level, pursue a doctoral degree, teach with greater expertise and effectiveness in K–12 education and more.   Interested in learning more about our on-campus program? Contact us today. With approval from the supervisory committee, students will complete: 1. Foundations Course (3 credits) Students must complete one of the following courses:
  • MAE 5332 – Secondary School Mathematics Methods and Assessment
  • MAE 5347 – Teaching K–6 Mathematics Methods
  • MAE 6177 – Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
2. Elective Courses (9 credits)
Students will select three additional courses* from the following:
  • MAE 5396 – Using Formative Assessment to Improve Mathematical Learning
  • MAE 5675 – AI for Teaching and Learning Mathematics
  • MAE 6313 – Problem Solving in School Mathematics
  • MAE 6349 – Classroom Contexts that Support Self-Regulated Learning and Mathematical Understandings
  • MAE 7899 – Mathematics Education Seminar 
*Students may also choose an additional course from the Foundations list (above) if not already taken.

How to Pursue the Graduate Minor

Students interested in pursuing the UF mathematics education graduate minor should first schedule a meeting with the mathematics education program coordinator, Richard Velasco, Ph.D. In this meeting, you will discuss whether the minor is an appropriate fit and if it can be reasonably completed alongside your primary degree program. Students will receive guidance regarding UF Graduate School requirements, supervisory committee membership requirements, program of study expectations and procedures for formally adding the minor.

    •     Minor coursework must be outside the student’s major field in accordance with UF Graduate School policies.
    •     Course selection should be planned in consultation with the student’s supervisory committee.
    •     Availability of courses may vary by semester, and students are encouraged to plan ahead.
    •     Competency in the minor is demonstrated through the student’s qualifying examination (written and/or oral), as determined by the supervisory committee.
