UF Journal of Undergraduate Research

It is time to consider entering the Journal of Undergraduate Research! UFJUR is published once per year and gives scholars a voice for their research in the arts and humanities, social, behavioral, education, STEM and medicine. Community Impact Funding – Brown Center for Leadership & Service

Undergraduate or graduate students are invited to apply for funding for civic or community-based initiatives that address a critical need in the Gainesville community. Funding of up to $2,000 support student-led engagement projects within Alachua County where students engage with community partners, staff, and/faculty. Projects should be designed in partnership with the community, founded in a mutually beneficial relationship that support positive change in the community. UF STEM Summer Camp Counselor

Description: The University of Florida Center for Precollegiate Education and Training (CPET) is seeking summer residential counselors for the Student Science Training Program. UF SSTP is a seven-week residential science immersion program for academically talented high school students. The program emphasis is research participation with a UF faculty research scientist and his or her research team. Students engage in the on-going research of the faculty-mentor for 28 hours each week, attend a lecture series on current research topics, and participate in a UF honors seminar class. Social activities, fieldtrips, and service projects engage students outside the classroom. Residential counselors are an integral part of our summer program providing leadership, mentorship, and supervision for the up to 90 SSTP participants. SSTP is housed in Lakeside residential complex. Two residential counselors live on each floor. A counselor’s responsibilities are multifaceted and range from working in the CPET office, to planning, organizing, and implementing activities, to leading small group discussions and providing feedback on academic assignments, to facilitating a safe and inclusive residential environment. We are seeking applicants who are motivated, mature, responsible, caring, and energetic to fill these positions.

Contract Dates: SSTP Counselors will be hired for a 10-week period, beginning May 22nd.  Prior to the start of the program, counselors work in the CPET office, assist in program preparation, and attend training.  The dates for this year’s seven-week SSTP are June 11th to July 29th. Applicants must be able to commit to living in the residence halls with the students, from program check-in to check-out (including overnight).  During SSTP, counselors will be provided set time off during weeks two thru six and one weekend off during the program.
Compensation: SSTP Counselors are provided a bedroom (shared suite) on a program-occupied floor in Lakeside Residential Complex and are paid on contract starting at $500 per week.

Institute of Reading Development - Summer Teaching Positions

Description: Teach Reading Classes to Students of All Ages — Now Accepting Applications for Summer 2023!
The Institute of Reading Development is now hiring summer teachers for our reading programs for students of all ages. In these programs we combine skills instruction with the experience of reading and discussing really good books. We help our students develop strong fluency and comprehension skills. Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

This is a great opportunity to do challenging and meaningful work in a supportive environment. Teaching experience is valuable but not necessary, and we do not require teaching certification. We welcome your application, whether you are an upcoming or recent college grad, a graduate student, or a current teacher.

Our Teachers:

  • Earn between $600-$700 per week.
  • Receive comprehensive paid training and ongoing support.
  • Gain over 250 hours of experience teaching their own classes to students from 4-year-olds to adults.

Schedule Details and Commitment:

  • 10-week seasonal commitment: 3 weeks of paid training followed by 6-7 weeks of teaching.
  • 37-40 hours per week.
  • Schedules consist of five days of teaching per week, including both weekend days.

  • Entry-level position, with opportunities for continued employment with the Institute after the summer.

Successful Institute Teachers:

  • Have strong reading skills and read fiction for pleasure.

University Press of Florida Internships

Description: Our internship program offers students of all majors the opportunity to gain employment experience in the business of book publishing. The Marketing Intern assists the Marketing Department of the State University System Press (University Press of Florida) in spreading the word about books published by the Press to readers everywhere, helping find, grow, and interact with audiences for Press books. The position also performs other clerical duties as assigned. Excellent written communication skills and organizational abilities are essential. This position is ideal for students who enjoy reading and discussing books, who want to gain experience in the publishing business, and who are interested in exploring book publishing or marketing as a career. Connect in Place Volunteers

Description: Looking for a fun volunteer opportunity? Teach a course with connectinplace.org, where college students teach free courses ranging from “The Art of Thinking Like a Computer” to “Minecraft: Intro to Architecture & Team Building” to “The History of Rock and Roll!” Connect in Place has taught 500+ classes to a community of 5,000+ students in 45 countries, and wants to continue making education more accessible + engaging this summer! We are now recruiting instructors for Session 1 (June 19th – July 14th) and Session 2 (July 24th – August 18th). Interviews will end April 9th for both sessions.

Florida Literacy Coalition Volunteers

Description: The Florida Literacy Coalition, in collaboration with adult education programs throughout Florida, will be offering classes via Zoom during regularly scheduled times throughout the week. Instructors commit to the following:

1) Leading an intermediate-level distance learning class of up to 20 adult English language learners for one 90-minute class per week for 8 weeks. You will be paired with a co-teacher.
2) Using free online materials.
3) Attending one mandatory instructor training session

4) Participating in three instructor meet-ups during the semester.

Description: Gainesville family offers an opportunity for students whose native language is English to assist a 15-year-old boy on the autism spectrum in Reading/Writing, Math, Science, or other 8th-level classes as a tutor. (Experience with K-12 education or special education students is desirable but not necessary.) The family is also looking for a student who can help in swimming, basketball, tennis, or outside sports activities as a coach.
