The School for the Deaf & Blind - Math Teacher

About The School for the Deaf & Blind: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families.  The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more, fulfilling our vision of preparing them for a lifetime of success.

The mission of FSDB is to utilize all available talent, energy, and resources to provide free appropriate public education for eligible sensory impaired students of Florida. Description: Teach sensory impaired students in a state-mandated academic program. Conduct and direct student learning experiences using written lesson plans that cover the requirements of the State with regard to the Florida State Standards and course descriptions.  Use required instructional materials with fidelity to introduce and develop concepts.  Develop and maintain a classroom management program.  Identify/develop, implement, use, monitor and evaluate long and short-term objectives based on students’ IEPs.  Analyze and utilize student data to drive instruction.  Monitor student progress based on the goals of the IEP, and FSDB and State mandated objectives.  Record and report data on individual students, i.e, keep grade books, report cards, progress monitoring reports, incident reports, interim reports, attendance records, etc.  Document and correct disruptive student behavior in accordance with school policies and procedures.  Maintain a professional relationship with students, parents, and other staff members. Attend trainings/meetings and implement skills acquired during professional development activities as required by Federal, State and FSDB mandates.

Knowledge of the educational needs of deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or blind/visually impaired students.  Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communications. Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of teaching.  Knowledge of the principles of human learning, behavior, and counseling.  Knowledge of the principles and techniques of curriculum development.  Ability to teach individuals in a classroom setting using the principles of differentiated instruction.  Ability to prepare teaching plans, courses, activities and learning experiences for a variety of students.  Ability to develop appropriate curriculums.  Ability to handle problems, concerns and emotional distress with sensitivity and tact.  Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.  Ability to work independently.  Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to classroom teaching.  Ability to plan, establish priorities and implement activities for maximum effectiveness.  Ability to communicate effectively.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.  Ability to maintain certification in the appropriate content/subject area.  Ability to maintain certification in the appropriate sensory impaired area.  Ability to apply the principles of Response to Intervention. Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPI and CPR. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Florida Department of Education certification in Math 9-12 (or eligible for certification upon hire)
  • Current certification in Visually Impaired K-12 (or eligible for certification upon hire)
  • Current ESOL Endorsement (or eligible for certification upon hire).

Hourly Research Instructional Coaches

Description: This OPS (hourly) position will be part of the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Florida. We are hiring part-time instructional coaches for a research study federally funded by a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences. The grant investigates the effects of the BEST in CLASS– Elementary intervention targeting the reduction of challenging the behavior of young students at risk for emotional/behavioral disorders in elementary school classrooms. The intervention is designed to enhance and support elementary teachers’ in grades K-3rd use of effective instructional practices that can help support learning and prevent challenging behaviors, and to increase teachers’ partnerships with the students’ caregivers. Most teachers are already using many of the BEST in CLASS practices in their classroom; however, when teachers increase and enhance their use of these practices, many students at risk for emotional/behavioral disorders will learn the social and behavioral skills necessary for school success. Coaches will provide training and individual coaching support to elementary school teachers for each week as they learn to implement the BEST in CLASS intervention. This includes meeting weekly with teachers and maintaining contact via email and texting with teachers. Coaches will also assist in data collection of measures for the research study. Training will be provided on how to implement the BEST in CLASS coaching model, collect teacher implementation data in the classroom, and other measures as indicated.

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work effectively individually and as part of a team and have strong verbal and written communication skills. Position expectations include:

  • Work approximately 25 hours per week, including mornings
  • Schedule and complete weekly classroom observations and meetings with assigned teachers
  • Follow protocol for data collection, confidentiality, and management
  • Attend scheduled research trainings and meetings
  • Adhere to manualized coaching procedures
  • Demonstrate independence and initiative in completing grant-related responsibilities according to timelines
  • Display professional conduct
  • Respond promptly to communications from teacher participants and the research team
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Assist with additional research-related activities, when applicable

This is a time-limited position. Expected dates of employment are September 6, 2022- April 28, 2023. The expected hours for this position will fall between 07:00 a.m. – 05:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. This position, however, requires flexibility. Travel across north and central Florida is required.

EXPECTED SALARY: $20-$25/hour

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a Related Field; Previous teaching experience; Ability to develop positive, supportive relationships with teachers; Ability to work independently and meet deadlines; Excellent verbal/written communication skills and attention to detail; Sufficient computer skills and comfort with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Google Drive; Ability to multitask and learn new information; Professional attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Hourly Research Data Collection Position

Description: This OPS (hourly) position will be part of the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Florida. This position is supported by several research grants funded by the Institute of Education Sciences and the National Institutes of Health. This position is designed to assist in the implementation of research activities related to the BEST in CLASS intervention, including data collection, data entry, and other related research activities. BEST in CLASS is a preventive intervention targeting the reduction of challenging behaviors of young children at risk for social-emotional delays. The intervention is designed to enhance and support early childhood teachers’ use of effective instructional practices that support learning and prevent challenging behaviors.

We are looking for motivated individuals with experience working in schools or collecting data to join our team. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to work effectively individually and as part of a team and conduct various research tasks (e.g., data collection and entry), and have strong verbal and written communication skills. Position expectations include:

  • Work approximately 10-20 hours per week, including at least 2-3 mornings per week
  • Attend scheduled research trainings and meetings
  • Adhere to manualized research procedures
  • Demonstrate independence and initiative in completing grant-related responsibilities
  • Complete all tasks according to timelines
  • Display professional conduct
  • Respond promptly to communications from participants and the research team
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow specified organizational format for all research materials
  • Assist with additional research-related activities, when applicable

This is a time-limited position. Expected dates of employment are August 8, 2022- June 2, 2023. The expected hours for this position will fall between 07:00 a.m. – 05:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. This position, however, requires flexibility. Travel across north and central Florida is required.
