INTERNS/PRACTICUM STUDENTS
How it Works
Roles & Responsibilities
As an intern or practicum student, you become an active member of a professional community and play an important role in the educational setting in which you are placed. Throughout your clinical experience, you will work collaboratively with your mentor teacher/site supervisor, university supervisor, and site host or school administrator as you develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of a professional educator or practitioner.
Interns and practicum students are expected to:
- Follow the guidance and support of their clinical experience team to successfully meet program requirements, competencies, and professional expectations.
- Maintain consistent attendance and arrive at their placement site on time and prepared to participate fully in daily activities.
- Demonstrate professional conduct, communication, and dress that aligns with the expectations of the placement site and the profession.
- Engage actively in teaching, learning, observation, and other assigned clinical responsibilities.
- Accept and apply constructive feedback provided by supervisors and mentors to support ongoing professional growth.
- Reflect on experiences and participate in meaningful discussions regarding progress toward program goals and competencies.
Through regular observations, feedback, and collaboration with members of the clinical experience team, interns and practicum students will have opportunities to strengthen their professional practice and develop the skills necessary for success in their chosen field.
The Placement Process
The University of Florida College of Education places students in a variety of settings based on their program of study and the program’s delivery format. Internship and practicum placements are not limited to Alachua County and may occur anywhere within Florida or, when permitted by program requirements, outside the state.
Because placement requirements can vary significantly by program, school district, school, agency, facility, state, and occasionally international location, students must follow all guidance provided by their program coordinator and the Office of Clinical Experiences through EduGator Central. Adherence to established placement procedures is essential for ensuring compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and approval requirements.
If you anticipate completing your clinical experience outside of Alachua County, please notify your program coordinator as early as possible. Early communication allows sufficient time to determine placement feasibility, establish any required agreements, and address site-specific requirements.
The success of our students’ clinical experiences is a top priority, and early planning plays a critical role in ensuring a smooth and successful placement process.
Placement Process and Notification
- The clinical placement process follows established guidelines, policies, and procedures that are specific to each placement location and site. Requirements may vary by school district, school, agency, facility, state, or other placement setting.
- Students should not independently contact facility personnel, school districts, schools, administrators, or teachers to arrange their own internship or practicum placement. The Office of Clinical Experiences manages placement coordination to ensure compliance with university, district, facility, agency, and state requirements, as well as site-specific approval processes.
- Student placement preferences and needs are collected either from program based Intern or Practicum Placement Applications/Surveys or through consultation with the program coordinator. These preferences are submitted directly to the Office of Clinical Experiences for review and then the placement process officially begins.
- If there are any questions or concerns regarding information about a student’s placement preferences or needs, this will be addressed at this time.
- Then, the Office of Clinical Experiences will contact the district or facility/site for each student’s placement to discuss placement options and processing requirements.
- District/Facility site specific paperwork, background/fingerprint instructions, etc. will be sent to each student to complete before a placement can be finalized. If your program has local intern/practicum placements, then you may receive the fingerprinting/background paperwork earlier in your program of study, during early field experiences, such as with our Elementary Education in-person program.
- Formal requests for internship/practicum placements are always formalized between the College of Education and the district/facility site, not the student.
- Please keep in mind that placement requests and preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed
- Once a placement has been finalized, the Office of Clinical Experiences or the Program Coordinator (or program related faculty) will notify the student of their official placement. At that time, the placement will be entered into Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText, depending on the platform used to manage the student’s clinical experience. Once notified and upon approval by the program coordinator, the student may initiate contact with their assigned mentor/site supervisor and site host (or principal) at the placement site.
- Students should also check the district or facility calendars of the sites of their internship and mark down important dates and temporary closures, as these could affect the days a student is on site for a placement. Students should also research their site and get familiar with the facility or school.
- Approval for placements come in at varying times due to a number of circumstances. Please understand that is is not uncommon for students in your same internship or practicum class to receive their placement information at different times.

Midterm and Final Intern/Practicum Evaluations
Midterm and final evaluations are required components of the clinical experience process and provide important feedback regarding your professional growth, performance, and progress toward meeting program competencies and professional standards.
Evaluation requirements vary by program. Some internship/practicum experiences require both a midterm evaluation and a final evaluation, while others require only a final evaluation. Your program coordinator, mentor/site supervisor, and/or UF Supervisor can help clarify the evaluation requirements for your specific placement.
These evaluations are completed by your mentor/site supervisor and/or UF Supervisor and serve as formal assessments of your performance throughout the clinical experience. Timely completion of all required evaluations is essential for documenting satisfactory progress and, when applicable, supporting program completion and graduation requirements.
- Midterm and final internship/practicum evaluations are completed by both the mentor/site supervisor and the university/faculty supervisor within Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText, based on the platform designated by the student’s program. Mentor/site supervisors and university/faculty supervisors are notified of the appropriate platform when a placement is assigned.
- For graduation clearance, students enrolled in certification programs must have a completed Final Internship/Practicum Evaluation with an average rating of 3.0 or higher.
- As the conclusion of an internship or practicum approaches, students are encouraged to follow up with both their mentor/site supervisor and university/faculty supervisor to ensure that all required final evaluations have been completed and submitted.
- Students should regularly monitor their Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText account to verify that placement information, evaluations, and other required assessment activities have been completed successfully.
Placement Satisfaction and Exit Surveys
A hallmark of a high-quality educator preparation program is gathering meaningful feedback from students about their program of study and clinical experiences. This feedback, combined with data from other program assessments, helps the University of Florida College of Education evaluate program effectiveness and continuously improve academic programs and clinical placement experiences.
To support this continuous improvement process, students are asked to complete two surveys:
1. Exit Survey (Program Evaluation): Provides feedback on the overall quality and effectiveness of the program of study.
2. Placement Satisfaction Survey (Internship/Practicum Evaluation): Provides feedback on the quality of the internship or practicum placement experience.
All survey responses are kept confidential and reported in aggregate form, with identifying information removed.
Students may receive these surveys through their program coordinator as part of a final seminar course, through an email from the College of Education’s Field Placement Coordinator, or as an assignment within Student Learning and Licensure (SLL).
Student participation is highly valued, as survey results play an important role in informing program improvements and strengthening future clinical experiences for University of Florida students.
Online Placement & Evaluation Platforms
NOTICE: The University of Florida College of Education is currently transitioning from LiveText to Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) for the management of clinical experiences and assessment activities.
Students entering the first courses of a certification program must register for SLL, as course ratings and evaluations required for certification will be completed through this platform.
Students who have already registered for LiveText and are continuing in their program or completing their final internship/practicum placements will remain in LiveText through graduation.
Mentor teachers, site supervisors, and university supervisors will use the platform assigned to the students they support. During this transition period, some supervisors may need access to both LiveText and SLL until LiveText is fully retired.
For any questions regarding accessing either of these platforms, please contact Kim Roberts.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am currently employed at the site where I would like to complete my internship/practicum placement. Is a job-embedded placement an option?
Internship requirements vary significantly by program and by each student’s unique circumstances. As a result, it is not uncommon for students to request a job-embedded placement, particularly in online and graduate-level programs. While a job-embedded placement cannot be guaranteed, it is often possible when the student’s employment setting aligns with program and/or state requirements. Students interested in pursuing a job-embedded placement should communicate this preference as early as possible. Early communication allows the Program Coordinator and Office of Clinical Experiences to determine whether a job-embedded placement is feasible and identify any additional requirements that may apply.
I am enrolled in a state-approved educator preparation program (certification-track program) that leads to eligibility of Florida educator certification upon completion of all program requirements. However, I would like to complete my required internship/practicum placement out of state. Can I complete my internship/practicum outside of Florida and still be eligible for Florida educator certification?
No. Students enrolled in a Florida state-approved educator preparation program (certification-track program) are required to complete their internship/practicum placement in Florida under the supervision of an approved mentor or site supervisor who meets Florida state requirements. This is necessary to receive the state-approved program statement on one’s transcript for eligibility of Florida educator certification.
I will be starting an internship next term; however, I am currently out of state until the term begins. How do I get my fingerprinting and background check completed?
Fingerprinting can be completed out of state by scheduling an appointment with an approved LiveScan provider. Before being fingerprinted, you must receive instructions from the district where you will be completing your internship, as you will need to provide the LiveScan provider with a specific code and ensure that your fingerprints are submitted to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Fingerprinting Clearinghouse. Do not obtain out-of-state fingerprinting services until you have consulted with the Office of Clinical Experiences through EduGator Central. You may contact the clinical experiences office at studentplacements@coe.ufl.edu
I was fingerprinted when I worked as a substitute teacher or served in another role, such as a camp counselor. Will those fingerprints be valid for my internship/practicum placement?
Maybe. In some cases, fingerprints completed for substitute teaching and other roles are accepted by a district for internship placement purposes. Acceptance depends on several factors, including the level of background clearance obtained, the vendor that conducted the fingerprinting and background check, and whether the fingerprint results are available in the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Fingerprinting Clearinghouse. Fingerprinting completed through a substitute staffing agency, such as ESS, is often not accepted. Because requirements vary by district and placement site, eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.
I have completed a volunteer application and received Level 1 clearance. Will this meet the requirements for my internship/practicum placement?
No. A Level 2 background clearance is required for internship/practicum placements in Florida schools. Background check and fingerprinting requirements vary by district, and districts typically provide specific instructions for interns and practicum students. Students should not complete fingerprinting until they have received the appropriate instructions from the University of Florida College of Education’s Office of Clinical Experiences for the district in which they will be placed.
I am experiencing an issue with my current placement. What steps should I take to seek assistance?
It is important for students to know that they are not alone in this process. A dedicated team is available to support you throughout your clinical experience. If you encounter a concern or issue with your placement, your first step should be to inform your university/faculty supervisor. If additional support or intervention is needed, please contact your program coordinator and the Office of Clinical Experiences through EduGator Central at studentplacements@coe.ufl.edu
Once I graduate, how do I apply for Florida educator certification?
- Once you graduate, you can apply for Florida educator certification through the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). For step-by-step guidance on the certification process, please visit: https://education.ufl.edu/student-services/certificate/
- To access the FLDOE online certification application portal, please visit: https://www.fldoe.org/teaching/certification/on-line-application-status-lookup-site.stml
I submitted my application for professional certification a long time ago, but my certification has not yet been approved. Is there anything I can do to verify my qualifications and apply for jobs in the meantime?
Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline for how long it will take for your application to be processed. If you believe there may be an issue with your application, please contact the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) directly at education.certification@fldoe.org with questions related to your certification application. If you are seeking employment in a public-school setting, the certification specialist in the school district(s) where you are seeking employment may also be able to assist you, as they often have additional access to FLDOE records and application notes.
In the meantime, you are encouraged to begin applying for positions. The University of Florida College of Education can provide a Job Help Letter that explains your program of study and may assist you in securing employment while your certification application is being processed. To request a Job Help Letter, please email Sarah Nassoiy at sarahmk@coe.ufl.edu.
I am moving to another state. Will my completion of a Florida state-approved educator preparation program be recognized in another state?
It is often possible for completion of a state-approved educator preparation program and/or educator certificate to be recognized by another state; however, reciprocity is not guaranteed. You will need to visit the Department of Education (or equivalent licensing agency) website in the state where you are seeking certification to review the requirements for recognizing out-of-state certifications and educator preparation programs.
Because each state has its own certification processes and requirements, it is important to read all instructions carefully. If you have difficulty finding the information you need, contact the Human Resources department of the school district where you wish to seek employment and ask to speak with a certification specialist. These individuals often have the most up-to-date knowledge of state certification requirements and pathways for educators seeking certification.
I am applying for certification in another state and need a form completed to verify my program completion and/or internship/practicum hours. Who should I contact for assistance?
For assistance with out-of-state certification forms related to program completion, internship/practicum hours, or certification eligibility verification, please contact Sarah Nassoiy at sarahmk@coe.ufl.edu.
