Application Instructions

To ensure we can consider your application, please be sure all required application materials are submitted by the posted deadline.

Step 1: Submit your University of Florida Graduate School Application

  • Select on-campus Ed.S. Specialist in Education as your desired program
  • Please choose one of the following as your Program of Study: “Mental Health Counseling,” “Marriage and Family Counseling” or “School & Guidance Counseling”.
  • A $30.00 (non-refundable) Application Fee is required. Credit card payments require an additional $7.00 processing fee
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Official transcripts sent to: University of Florida, Office of Admissions, PO Box 114000, Gainesville, FL 32611-4000

NOTE: Previously enrolled graduate students who have skipped two or more terms and are looking to return to the exact same program and degree level at which they previously attended should apply using the Returning Student Application.

Step 2: Supporting Application Material

Please upload the resume, scholarly paper and your two most recent annual teacher evaluations with your UF online graduate application under “Other Upload” with the Upload Resume section of the UF online application. Please combine all documents into one PDF document for upload if you cannot upload separate documents.

Required Program Application Materials

  1. Résumé – Pursuant to Florida Statute, your application requires inclusion of all post-high school education and employment, as well as information about ongoing international affiliations and research funding. Please ensure this information is included on your curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé.
  2. Personal statement – Limit your statement to three single-spaced pages, with standard 1-inch margins and 12-point font. This personal statement fulfills the Statement of Purpose requirement of the UF Graduate Application. Include the following information:

          • Why do you want to be a counselor? (Describe any relevant experiences)
          • List and discuss three of your personal qualities that you believe will help assist you in becoming a successful counselor.
          • Discuss one personal area of growth that you believe you will need to change or improve to become a successful counselor.
          • Describe your short-term and long-term goals. How does the program you are applying to relate to these goals? (Please limit your response to one or two paragraphs.)
  3. Completed Counselor Statement Exercise

    Application Deadlines

    • We are no longer accepting applications for the class beginning Fall 2026. Applicants who wish to begin our program in Fall 2027 must submit their completed applications and supplemental materials by November 1, 2026.*
    • Allow 2-4 weeks to gather all application materials, including official transcripts and letters of recommendation, as all materials are required for review and admission.
    • Applicants can expect to hear back from the program by mid-April.

    *Domestic students only. International applicants should consider that the application dates may not allow enough time for the processing of immigration requirements. It is strongly advised that international students apply at least 6 months before the date they intend to start the program.
