Scholarships for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

The application for 2024-2025 scholarships is now open. Please submit all required materials by February 11, 2024.

General Information

The College of Education awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students through an annual scholarship selection process. Eligibility for individual awards is determined by the College of Education based on a student’s Fall 2024 classification. All information submitted will be verified and only complete applications will be considered.

Application Instructions

One scholarship application will qualify students to be considered for all College of Education Scholarships for which they are eligible. Recommendation forms should be sent by your recommenders to scholarships@coe.ufl.edu by the application deadline.  A complete scholarship application includes:

  • COE Scholarship Application
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae:  *Doctoral (Ed.D. and Ph.D. students only) include educational qualifications, work experience, teaching experience, leadership positions, professional activities, community service, scholarships and awards submitted via Qualtrics
  • A 500 – 750 word essay(typed, double-spaced):  respond to the following:  Specify your career goals and how your study at the University of Florida relates to those goals. Include evidence of your interest in, commitment to, and/or potential for leadership in the field of education. Identify your essay with your name and UFID. Submitted via Qualtrics
  • Two Scholarship Recommendation forms: from current or former professors, employers, or others who know you well (recommendations from family members will not be accepted)
    • NOTE: Recommenders will not receive an automatic prompt to complete their recommendations when the electronic application form is completed. Please be sure to forward a copy of the recommendation form to your recommenders and have them send their completed recommendation forms directly to scholarships@coe.ufl.edu.
  • Students who would like to be considered for the Dr. James L. Wattenbarger Fellowship or the J. W. Martin and A. M. Martin Phillips Scholarship Fund should note the additional requirements in the scholarship descriptions below.

**Several scholarships require demonstration of financial need. In order to be eligible for these awards, students must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the FAFSA website by February 1, 2024 to be considered for the 2024-2025 AY. If you are an international applicant and/or are unable to submit FAFSA, please submit the Financial Need Test form.

Notification of Selection

All College of Education Scholarship applicants will be notified of a decision by late April 2024. Students who are selected to receive a College of Education Scholarship will be invited to attend the Recognition Banquet as a guest of the Dean.
All College of Education Scholarship funds are available and distributed in the Fall 2024 term, unless noted otherwise.

Undergraduate Scholarship

Shirley M. Cowans Scholarship

Available to: Undergraduate students in the College of Education. Preference given to students from Oak Ridge, Evans, Jones or Pensacola High Schools.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

Education Station & Preschool Annual Scholarship

Available to: undergraduate students studying early childhood education at the UF College of Education. Preference will be given to students from Alachua County who demonstrate financial need.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

Lancaster Scholarship

Available to: Undergraduates admitted to a professional teacher education program in the College of Education.

Requires: Full-time enrollment in the College of Education at the University of Florida.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,250

J. W. Martin and A. M. Martin Phillips Scholarship Fund

Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

Available to: Full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree in education at the University of Florida. Preference given to students who attended high school in Alachua county (must submit copy of diploma or official high school transcripts).

Amount to be Awarded: 9 @ $3,000

Graduates Scholarship

Barbara and Richard Anderson Scholarship

Available to: Graduate students entering the College of Education. First preference given to graduates of or employees of Florida Gateway College (formerly Lake City Community College). Second preference given to students from Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist or Union counties. Third preference given to residents of Florida entering the College of Education.

Amount to be awarded: 1 @ $1,000

Kent Batchelder School Counselor Scholarship

Available to: Graduate Students in School Counseling who demonstrate financial need. Preference given to students from Vermont (first), Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Tarpon Springs, Florida. Preference also given to students who plan to intern/work as middle school counselors.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000 + $1,300 for travel

Mildred M. and Robert S. Baynard Fund

Available to: students pursuing an advanced degree in literacy and reading at the College of Education.

Amount to be Awarded: 5 @ $4,750

Dr. Frank C. and Juliette D. Bolser Memorial Fellowship

Available to: Students who have a degree in mathematics and are pursuing a graduate degree in mathematics education with the intent to teach mathematics in the public school system.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $5,000

Glenda Ward Caro Fellowship in Education

Available to: Graduate Students in the College of Education.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

The Clark Scholarship, in honor of Laura M. Clark

Available to: Graduate Students in the College of Education who are in the ProTeach program.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

Denton L. and Vivian H. Cook Scholarship

Available to: Graduate students in teacher education programs in the College of Education. Graduates of the public high schools of Plant City, Mt. Dora and Clermont are to be given scholarship preference.
Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500

Jennifer L. Coxen Scholarship

Available to: Graduate students in the ProTeach program focusing on elementary education in the UF College of Education. Preference given to first generation college students.
Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,200

Brian Dassler Transformational Leader Memorial Fund

Available to: Graduate students seeking opportunities to transform schools and schooling through leadership and higher education, with a preference for students with an interest in educational policy.
Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

Delia Mariah Julia Brooks Robinson McKnight Scholarship

Available to:Graduate Students in the College of Education who are in the ProTeach program.
Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $500

Dr. Jason Gallant and Mrs. Marlene Teitler Scholarship to honor the lives of Harry and Pauline Zaid

Available to: Graduate students in the School Psychology program.

Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $500

    Gerardo M. and Marjorie A. Gonzalez Fellowship

    Available to: Graduate students who are conducting work to advance research knowledge and/or professional practice related to the role of freedom of speech, academic freedom, or student rights in academe. Preference given to students in the Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Counselor Education programs.

    Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

      Lincoln and Lillian Hall in Memory of Albert G. Hall Fellowship Fund

      Available to: Early childhood and elementary education graduate students.

      Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in the Early Childhood or Elementary Education ProTeach programs in the College of Education.

      Amount to be Awarded: 2 @ $2,000

        Dr. Clemens Lester Hallman Fellowship

        Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education preparing for teaching or teacher education in one of the following three areas: 1) Bilingual education, 2) Foreign Language education, or 3) ESOL education.

        Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

          Vernice Law Hearn Scholarship

          Available to: Full-time ProTeach graduate students in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Special Education.

          Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a professional teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Florida.

          Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            Dr. Charles A. Henderson Fellowship

            Available to: Practicing teachers in Florida pursuing advanced degrees in the College of Education. Additional travel award to attend Florida Association of Staff Development (FASD) Conference or similar meeting. Recipient required to write an essay.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500+ $750 for travel

            Charles A. and Alma A. Hoffman Scholarship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Full-time graduate students preparing to teach mathematics at the middle or secondary level.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Gayle and Arthur Horne Education Scholarship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education. Must be from Alachua County with consideration for a graduate of P.K. Yonge or Gainesville High School.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            June Dillard Prince Marks Scholarship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Graduate students in the ProTeach program.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Maxwell and Doris King Annual Scholarship

            Available to: Distance education students seeking a degree in the Leadership Educational Administration Doctorate (LEAD) in Higher Education Administration; based on scholastic merit.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $600

            Karen Koegel Annual Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in Special Education
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Stephanie Kornprobst Wester Endowed Fellowship

            Available to:Graduate students in the College of Education with preference given to students working in collaboration with P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School.
            Amount to be Awarded: 2 @ $3,000

            Elizabeth Larsen Graduate Memorial Scholarship

            Available to: Full-time ProTeach graduate students in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Special Education.

            Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a professional teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Florida
            Amount to be Awarded: 7 @ $3,000

            Chester W. Leathers Annual Scholarship

            Available to:Graduate students in the School of Human Development and Organizational Studies in Education who are committed to the advancement of racial and ethnic diversity in higher education or public education.

            Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a professional teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Florida
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $4,800

            Elizabeth and William F. Leonard Endowment Scholarship

            Available to: Full-time Math or Science Education graduate students in the College of Education preparing to teach mathematics or science at the middle or secondary level.
            Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a professional teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Florida
            Amount to be Awarded: 2 @ $6,000

            William and Lucille Lindsay Fund

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Graduate students in the Student Personnel in Higher Education program.

            Amount to be Awarded: 3 @ $5,000

            Mallonee Early Childhood Fellowship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Graduate students at the College of Education focused on Early Childhood Education. Preference given to individuals focused on pre-K who plan to teach.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500

            David and Brian Marshall Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in Counselor Education.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $500

            Dr. Vincent McGuire Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in the English ProTeach program in the College of Education.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500

            The Stella Meissner Scholarship Fund

            Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Rose Meltzer Annual Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education specializing in Special Education. Preference given to those who intend to teach at the secondary education level, Grades 6-12.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,200

            The Jessie Hamm Meyer Graduate Award

            Available to: Students in the College of Education who are returning teachers, with first preference to career teachers returning for graduate studies, who plan to study gifted education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            Michael William Christopher Haney Annual Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in a Special Education program. Preference will be given to students from, or aspiring to work in, rural communities.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            The Jamee and Gilbert Miller Fellowship

            Available to: Graduate students in the ProTeach program with preference given to students with an interest in Educational Technology.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $3,000

            Misty and Michael Minton Endowed Special Education Graduate Scholarship in Honor of Camille Greene

            Available to: Graduate students in the ProTeach program specializing in Special Education. Preference given to those who intend to teach at the secondary education level, grades 6-12.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Norman and Maggie Nelson Scholarship for Counselor Education

            Available to: Graduate Students focusing on Counselor Education in the College of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            Thomas Oakland International School Psychology Fellowship Endowment

            Available to: Graduate students in school psychology who attended college or high school in another country, or a US student focused on international work.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Polston Family Annual Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in the ProTeach program. Preference will be given to students from Highlands County and who demonstrate financial need.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            J. Ed and Betty Price Scholarship Fund

            Available to: Graduate students in Counselor Education who plan to work in college level student affairs.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            Robert B. Primack Social Foundation for Education Fellowship

            Available to: Graduate students focusing on Social Foundations/History of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 2 @ $3,500

            Harold and Bette Riker Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students focusing on Counselor Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Della Rosenberg ProTeach Scholarship Fund

            Available to: 5th year graduate students in the ProTeach program. Preference will be given to students who graduated from a high school in the following counties: Bradford, Duval, Clay, St. Johns.
            Amount to be Awarded: 2 @ $11,875

            The Lauren C. Sampson Endowed Scholarship in School Psychology

            Available to: Graduate Students enrolled in the Educational Specialist degree program in School Psychology who plan a career as a School Psychologist in P-12 education. Preference given to students with financial need.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            The Carol Sofarelli Schraml Endowed Scholarship

            Available to: Students with a minimum 3.25 GPA who are seeking a degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education. Preference shall be given to students originating from Pinellas or Hillsborough County, or from the state of Florida. Preference will also be given to those who demonstrate significant community service or, alternatively, employment.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            G. Ballard Simmons Memorial Scholarship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education who received their bachelor’s degree in education.

            Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a graduate professional teacher education program at the University of Florida.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Dr. Walter Smith Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate level minority students for positions in educational leadership, community college, and university administration.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Michael John Solich Scholarship

            Available to: Secondary ProTeach Social Studies students.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Robert O. Stripling Scholarship

            Available to: Counselor Education doctoral students who are future counselors in higher education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500

            Dr. Larry W. Tyree Endowed Scholarship

            Available to: A student pursuing a master’s degree in counselor education in the College of Education.

            Marjorie Schear Waggoner Fellowship

            Available to: Masters students in Elementary Education. Recipient must be a Florida resident, graduate of a Florida high school, and enrolled in a full-time Masters program in Elementary Education. One-time only award.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,500

            Dr. Hannelore Wass Endowed Scholarship

            Available to: Graduate students in the College of Education. Scholarship awarded for the following:

            • Graduate students doing research in sex and gender role socialization in school settings and its effects on students’ career aspirations and choices.
            • Graduate work on developing rationale and practical guidelines for incorporating the study of the human life cycle, including aging and death, into the relevant study areas (e.g., life science, psychology and social studies).

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $5,000

            Dr. James L. Wattenbarger Fellowship

            Available to: Doctoral students.

            Requires:

            • Pursuit of Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Higher Education,
            • Submission of a proposal of 600 words which may be all or part of a dissertation on a subject which will:
              • Further knowledge of/about community colleges, and
              • Provide a basis for continued improvement of community colleges.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $3,000

            Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship

            John F. and Marjorie J. Alexander Scholarship

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Undergraduate and graduate students seeking a degree in the College of Education. First preference given to first generation college students.

            Requires: Minimum 2.5 GPA for students applying after the freshman year.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $600

            Fenton Family Scholarship

            Available to: Students in the UF College of Education
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Everett L. Holden and Marian G. Holden Memorial Scholarship Fund

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education.

            Amount to be Awarded: Undergraduate: 3 @ $3,000/ Graduate: 3 @ $3,000

            The Houde Dyal Endowed Scholarship

            Available to: Undergraduate and graduate student with preference fiven to students from Hillsborough Count on the basis of need and merit.

            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,000

            Norman F. Nelson Fellowship Fund

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Dr. Jess Patten and Sharon Van Dame Elliott Scholarship Endowment

            Available to: Undergraduate and Graduate students in the College of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $1,500

            William T. Phelps Scholarship Fund

            Available to: Full-time ProTeach students in Elementary education.

            Requires: Admission to or full-time enrollment in a professional teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Florida.
            Amount to be Awarded: 9 @ $4,000

            Ralph D. Turlington Scholarship and Fellowship Fund

            Available to: Full-time graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Education.

            Amount to be Awarded: 2 Undergrad @ $1,000 / 2 Grad @ $2,000

            Amber Vivian Turner Scholarship Fund

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education.
            Amount to be Awarded: 1 @ $2,000

            Evelyn L. Wenzel Memorial Scholarship Fund

            Must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this scholarship.

            Available to: Students pursuing a degree in the College of Education.

            Amount to be Awarded: Undergraduate: 2 @ $1,000/ Graduate: 3 @ $3,000

            2024-2025 College of Education Study Abroad Scholarship

            The College of Education awards study abroad scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students through an annual scholarship selection process. There will be five (5) study abroad awards available @ $1,000 each. Eligibility for study abroad awards require that students be enrolled in the College of Education. All information submitted will be verified and only complete applications will be considered.

            To apply, please complete the attached Study Abroad Scholarship Application along with a 500-750 word essay as described on the application. Complete applications are due via email to scholarships@coe.ufl.edu by 4:00pm, Monday, January 29, 2024. Award decisions will be made and recipients contacted by March 4, 2024.

            Minority Teacher Education Scholarship

            Deadline: July 1 for Fall; November 1 for Spring.
            Offers: $2,000 per semester for two years (four semesters) and in special circumstances can be extended an additional year.

            Available to: African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian-American/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaskan undergraduates with junior status.

            Requirements: Applicant must:

            1. Be a Florida resident,
            2. A minimum 2.5 GPA,
            3. Newly admitted into the teacher education program (or have no more than 18 upper-division education credits),
            4. Maintain a GPA of 2.5 each semester while in the scholarship program and
            5. Teach one year in a Florida public school for each year that she or he receives the scholarship.
