INTERNS/PRACTICUM STUDENTS

How it Works

Roles & Responsibilities

As an intern or practicum student, you become an active member of a professional community and play an important role in the educational setting in which you are placed. Throughout your clinical experience, you will work collaboratively with your mentor teacher/site supervisor, university supervisor, and site host or school administrator as you develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of a professional educator or practitioner.

Interns and practicum students are expected to:

  • Follow the guidance and support of their clinical experience team to successfully meet program requirements, competencies, and professional expectations.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and arrive at their placement site on time and prepared to participate fully in daily activities.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct, communication, and dress that aligns with the expectations of the placement site and the profession.
  • Engage actively in teaching, learning, observation, and other assigned clinical responsibilities.
  • Accept and apply constructive feedback provided by supervisors and mentors to support ongoing professional growth.
  • Reflect on experiences and participate in meaningful discussions regarding progress toward program goals and competencies.

Through regular observations, feedback, and collaboration with members of the clinical experience team, interns and practicum students will have opportunities to strengthen their professional practice and develop the skills necessary for success in their chosen field.

The Placement Process

The University of Florida College of Education places students in a variety of settings based on their program of study and the program’s delivery format. Internship and practicum placements are not limited to Alachua County and may occur anywhere within Florida or, when permitted by program requirements, outside the state.

Because placement requirements can vary significantly by program, school district, school, agency, facility, state, and occasionally international location, students must follow all guidance provided by their program coordinator and the Office of Clinical Experiences through EduGator Central. Adherence to established placement procedures is essential for ensuring compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and approval requirements.

If you anticipate completing your clinical experience outside of Alachua County, please notify your program coordinator as early as possible. Early communication allows sufficient time to determine placement feasibility, establish any required agreements, and address site-specific requirements.

The success of our students’ clinical experiences is a top priority, and early planning plays a critical role in ensuring a smooth and successful placement process.

Placement Process and Notification

  • The clinical placement process follows established guidelines, policies, and procedures that are specific to each placement location and site. Requirements may vary by school district, school, agency, facility, state, or other placement setting.
  • Students should not independently contact facility personnel, school districts, schools, administrators, or teachers to arrange their own internship or practicum placement. The Office of Clinical Experiences manages placement coordination to ensure compliance with university, district, facility, agency, and state requirements, as well as site-specific approval processes.
  • Student placement preferences and needs are collected either from program based Intern or Practicum Placement Applications/Surveys or through consultation with the program coordinator. These preferences are submitted directly to the Office of Clinical Experiences for review and then the placement process officially begins.
  • If there are any questions or concerns regarding information about a student’s placement preferences or needs, this will be addressed at this time.
  • Then, the Office of Clinical Experiences will contact the district or facility/site for each student’s placement to discuss placement options and processing requirements.
  • District/Facility site specific paperwork, background/fingerprint instructions, etc. will be sent to each student to complete before a placement can be finalized. If your program has local intern/practicum placements, then you may receive the fingerprinting/background paperwork earlier in your program of study, during early field experiences, such as with our Elementary Education in-person program.
  • Formal requests for internship/practicum placements are always formalized between the College of Education and the district/facility site, not the student.
  • Please keep in mind that placement requests and preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed
  • Once a placement is formalized, the Office of Clinical Experiences or Program Coordinator will email the student their official placement. At this point, the placement will be entered into Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText (depending of the platform the students placement will be housed) and the student may make contact with the mentor/site supervisor and site host (or principal) at their assigned placement site.
  • Students should also check the district or facility calendars of the sites of their internship and mark down important dates and temporary closures, as these could affect the days a student is on site for a placement. Students should also research their site and get familiar with the facility or school.
  • Approval for placements come in at varying times due to a number of circumstance. Please understand that is is not uncommon for students in your same internship or practicum class to receive their placement information at different times.
Florida map

FLORIDA DISTRICTS MAP

As online programs continue to expand, internship and practicum placements can occur throughout Florida and beyond. Students should be familiar with their preferred district as well as nearby districts and maintain flexibility in their placement plans. If a placement cannot be secured in a preferred district, alternative locations may need to be considered.
Midterm and Final Intern/Practicum Evaluations

Midterm and final evaluations are required components of the clinical experience process and provide important feedback regarding your professional growth, performance, and progress toward meeting program competencies and professional standards.

Evaluation requirements vary by program. Some internship/practicum experiences require both a midterm evaluation and a final evaluation, while others require only a final evaluation. Your program coordinator, mentor/site supervisor, and/or UF Supervisor can help clarify the evaluation requirements for your specific placement.

These evaluations are completed by your mentor/site supervisor and/or UF Supervisor and serve as formal assessments of your performance throughout the clinical experience. Timely completion of all required evaluations is essential for documenting satisfactory progress and, when applicable, supporting program completion and graduation requirements.

Clinical experience placements and internship/practicum evaluations are managed through either Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText, depending on the student’s program of study.

  • Midterm and final internship/practicum evaluations are completed by both the mentor/site supervisor and the university/faculty supervisor within Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText, based on the platform designated by the student’s program. Mentor/site supervisors and university/faculty supervisors are notified of the appropriate platform when a placement is assigned.
  • For graduation clearance, students enrolled in certification programs must have a completed Final Internship/Practicum Evaluation with an average rating of 3.0 or higher.
  • As the conclusion of an internship or practicum approaches, students are encouraged to follow up with both their mentor/site supervisor and university/faculty supervisor to ensure that all required final evaluations have been completed and submitted.
  • Students should regularly monitor their Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) or LiveText account to verify that placement information, evaluations, and other required assessment activities have been completed successfully.
Placement Satisfaction and Exit Surveys

A hallmark of a high-quality educator preparation program is gathering meaningful feedback from students about their program of study and clinical experiences. This feedback, combined with data from other program assessments, helps the University of Florida College of Education evaluate program effectiveness and continuously improve academic programs and clinical placement experiences.

To support this continuous improvement process, students are asked to complete two surveys:

1. Exit Survey (Program Evaluation): Provides feedback on the overall quality and effectiveness of the program of study.

2. Placement Satisfaction Survey (Internship/Practicum Evaluation): Provides feedback on the quality of the internship or practicum placement experience.

All survey responses are kept confidential and reported in aggregate form, with identifying information removed.

Students may receive these surveys through their program coordinator as part of a final seminar course, through an email from the College of Education’s Field Placement Coordinator (@coe.ufl.edu), or as an assignment within Student Learning and Licensure (SLL).

Student participation is highly valued, as survey results play an important role in informing program improvements and strengthening future clinical experiences for University of Florida students.

Online Placement & Evaluation Platforms

NOTICE: The University of Florida College of Education is currently transitioning from Livetext to Student Learning and Licensure (SLL) for the management of clinical experiences and assessment activities.

Students entering the first courses of a certification program must register for SLL, as course ratings and evaluations required for certification will be completed through this platform.

Students who have already registered for Livetext and are continuing in their program or completing their final internship/practicum placements will remain in Livet through graduation.

Mentor teachers, site supervisors, and university supervisors will use the platform assigned to the students they support. During this transition period, some supervisors may need access to both LiveText and SLL until LiveText is fully retired.

For any questions regarding accessing either of these platforms, please contact Kim Roberts.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am currently employed at the site I want to have my placement. Is a job embedded placement possible?

Internships vary significantly by program and each student’s unique situation. It is not uncommon for students to request a job embedded placement. This is particularly more common with online and graduate programs. Though we can’t always guaranteed a job embedded placement, in many cases it’s possible. Sharing one’s desire to have a job embedded internship right away is the key to determine if it’s possible.

I will be starting an internship next term, but I am currently out of the state until the term of the internship. How do I get my fingerprinting/background check done?

Fingerprinting can be done out of state by scheduling an appointment with an approved LiveScan provider. Before getting fingerprinted, you must receive the instructions from the district you will be interning as you must provide the LiveScan provider a specific code and ensure these prints are sent to the FLDOE fingerprinting clearinghouse. Do not seek out of state fingerprints until consulting with the Offices of Clinical Experiences in EduGator Central (studentplacements@coe.ufl.edu)

I am enrolled in a certification program but want to do my required internship/practicum out of state. Can I do my internship/practicum placement out of state and still earn Florida State Certification?

No – Florida state certification programs require internships to take place in the state of Florida to earn Florida state certification.

I am having an issue in my current placement. What are the steps I should take for help?

It is important for students to know that they are not alone in this process. There is a whole team to support you. The first action should be to inform your university/faculty supervisor of your concern. If further action is required, contact the Office of Clinical Experiences within EduGator Central (studentplacements@coe.ufl.edu).

I did fingerprinting when I served as a substitute teacher. Will these fingerprints work for my internship placement.

Maybe – In some cases substitute fingerprints are accepted by a particular district for an internship. It depends on the level of clearance of the fingerprinting/background check, the vendor who completed the background clearance, and whether these fingerprint results are in the FLDOE approved fingerprinting clearinghouse. Fingerprinting done when hired through a substitute contracting company, such as ESS, are often not accepted. This will vary on a case-by-case basis.

Will a volunteer application with a level 1 clearance work for my internship/practicum placement?

No – To be placed in a Florida school for an internship, a level 2 background clearance is required. Instructions for background checks vary by district and are specific for internships. Student’s should not get fingerprinted until they have been provided instructions for the district they will be interning from the University of Florida’s College of Education Clinical Experiences Office.

Once I graduate, how do I apply for certification in Florida?

I am moving to a new state, can I transfer my certificate?

It is often possible to transfer certification from one state to another, though not guaranteed. You will need to go to your new state’s Department of Education or related agency website and look up how to transfer an out of state certificate. Each state has a different process, so please read the instructions carefully. If you have trouble getting answers, contact the HR department of the district you want to get hired and ask to speak to their certification specialist. Often these individuals have the latest insight on state guidelines and pathways for individuals seeking certification out-of-state.

I need a form completed for certification in another state, who can fill it out for me?

You can send any program verification forms required for out-of-state certification to Sarah Nassoiy at sarahmk@coe.ufl.edu

I submitted my application for a professional certification FOREVER ago, when will I hear back?

Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline on how long it will take for your application to process. If you are applying for positions or if your school wants proof of your time at UF, we can provide a Job Help Letter. Please email Sarah Nassoiy at sarahmk@coe.ufl.edu to request a letter. Additionally, if you think there is an error with your application, contact the FLDOE directly at education.certification@fldoe.org for inquires related to your application. The certification specialist in your district may be also able to assist you, as they additional access to your FLDOE file and notes.
