NSF Announces Reorganization

January 22, 2026

As announced on December 15, 2025, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is restructuring the agency to create a more efficient, responsive organization in a rapidly evolving science and technology environment. As part of this effort, the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has reorganized its internal structure to reduce organizational layers, streamline engagement and review processes, and increase flexibility to pursue emerging research opportunities while maintaining its commitment to scientific rigor and world-class research. Although the divisional framework has changed, CISE programs remain in place under a new thematic organization spanning Human-Centered Computing and Education; Cyber, Physical, and Intelligent Systems; Computing and AI Foundations; Software and Systems Foundations; Center Scale and Testbeds; and the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure.
