Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Open

The 2023-2024 U.S. Scholar Program’s competition is now open. There are over 400 awards being offered in over 130 countries. Fulbright awards allow U.S. citizens to teach, research, and carry out professional projects abroad for up to one year. The program is also providing free webinars to learn more about the available opportunities. Applications are due Thursday, September 15, 2022.

UF Research Announces New Mandatory Courses

UF Research has announced the launch of two new courses developed in coordination with UF HR’s Training and Organizational Development group. The first course, RSH500, will be mandatory for PIs and key personnel. This course on Faculty Stewardship covers key concepts related to effort reporting as well as cost principles. This course replaces mandatory training courses RSH220 & RSH260 for PIs and key personnel participating in sponsored programs. PIs and key personnel who have previously completed RSH220 & RSH230 will be required to complete RSH500 no later than Thursday, September 1, 2022 in order to continue to participate in proposal and award actions for sponsored programs. The second course will be mandatory for research administrators. The courses will be available through myUFL with information on their Research Training page.

UF Call for Proposals: 2022 Advancing Racial Justice

In 2020, UF President Kent Fuchs designated the Black experience, racism, and inequity as the foci for the 2020-2021 academic year. To continue supporting these important and necessary conversations into 2022, UF Research and the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer at UF invite proposals for the second Advancing Racial Justice Seed Fund at the University of Florida. This call invites research and scholarship on Advancing Racial Justice through inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. Research and scholarship in the areas of the Black experience, including anti-Black racism, inequity, culture, joy, and resilience are especially encouraged. In addition, research that highlights intersectionality and the complexities of navigating multiple oppressed identities, will also be considered. Research Collaboration Opportunity in Europe for NSF Awardees

For researchers who have an active award with NSF, supplemental funds may be available to pursue research collaboration with European colleagues through the EU-funded European Research Council grants. You can request the list of ERC-funded PIs and researcher teams by emailing Roxanne Nikolaus at rnikolau@nsf.gov and then communicating directly with ERC PIs for a potential research match. European hosts will provide funding to support in-country living expenses during visits. Up to $20,000 may be available. More information on how to request this supplemental funding is available in the NSF’s Dear Colleague Letter. Requests must be received by NSF no later than Friday, May 27, 2022.

Effective Practices for Data Sharing

The National Science Foundation has released a Dear Colleague Letter to provide guidelines on data sharing in scientific research. The guidelines include effective practices for making research data discoverable and citable by other researchers. Proposals to the NSF are required to contain a Data Management Plan (DMP), and this letter addresses ways for NSF grantees to meet these requirements.

NSF Director’s Statement on FY2023 Budget

The executive branch of the federal government has submitted a budget request for FY2023, and the director of NSF has released a related statement. The proposed budget includes over $10 billion for the National Science Foundation. These funds would go to the following priorities: accelerating research and development in climate change and clean energy, advancing equity in science and engineering, expediting technology development in emerging technologies, continuing the construction and procurement of research infrastructure and instrumentation, and supporting NSF operations and award management. More information about anticipated fund allocation is available on the NSF’s budget page. This proposed budget is subject to approval by the U.S. legislative branch.

NSF Announces New Directorate

The National Science Foundation’s Director Sethuraman Panchanathan announced that a new directorate is being created for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP), the first new directorate in over 30 years. TIP will focus on creating innovative new technologies and advancing research and education across STEM fields. For more information, read the NSF news release.

The Office of Research is hosting a workshop to encourage proposal submissions by early career faculty and researchers. The workshop will provide a deep-dive into over a dozen federal funding opportunities from NSF, NIH, and more. It initiates the departmentally led red team review process for NSF CAREER proposals, which are due in late July. There will be two sessions offered; please provide your availability in advance.
