The College of Education at the University of Florida is seeking an Associate Dean for Research. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position that reports to the Dean of the College of Education. The Associate Dean for Research collaborates with faculty, COE administration, and Centers to develop and implement policies, research infrastructure, and incentives to advance the research and scholarship mission of the COE.  The ADR oversees the Office of Educational Research and directly supervises 5 professional staff. In addition, the ADR will lead the College’s comprehensive research agenda and external funding activities in conjunction with the University’s Division of Sponsored Research. The ADR will promote and coordinate collaborative research and interdisciplinary efforts within the COE, UF colleges, universities, and research centers, and national peer research institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Promote faculty scholarship and success in securing public and private funding
  2. Lead all matters related to research, contracts, grants, and faculty development to support the development of the COE research enterprise.
  3. Mentor faculty to initiate a research agenda and respond successfully to calls for external research funding
  4. Support efforts to fund high quality doctoral students capable of contributing to the COE research agenda
  5. Manage a comprehensive Office for Educational Research (OER), and continue to build necessary infrastructure for supporting research and development efforts
  6. Represent the COE research agenda and faculty research efforts with external funding agencies (e.g., IES, NFS, State of Florida agencies, private foundations)
  7. Represent the college research efforts within the University and externally and be the primary liaison with campus and external funding agencies, as well as establish strategic partnerships to pursue new research opportunities.
  8. Provide advice to the Dean and contribute to senior management team decisions.
  9. Develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with all relevant faculties and groups within the University.
  10. Work with the advancement staff to maximize private foundation connections in support of significant grants and gifts for research centers, endowed professorships, etc.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

1) Earned doctorate in fields closely related to education or the social sciences; 2) Successful academic experience and credentials to qualify for a tenured appointment as a full professor; 3) demonstrated administrative experience, which could include being a department chair, project director of a large grant, or center/institute; (4) proven track record in publishing research and in securing and managing external grants and contracts; (5) strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues across units within the College and across the University; and, (6) ability to organize large-scale, multi-disciplinary projects and operate under tight deadlines.

The preferred starting date is July 1, 2011. Salary: Negotiable. Scope of Work
The Office of Educational Research (OER) is a service unit within the College of Education Dean’s area, established in 2005. Its mission is to initiate, support and develop the sponsored research, training, and service activities of faculty and graduate students. The OER provides the following support services: Finding Potential Funding Sources (targeted searches of training and research grants for faculty and doctoral students using web-based search engines); Finding Potential Collaborators (searchable database of faculty research profiles and coordination and support for collaborative, interdisciplinary research groups); Proposal Development (project design and statistics consultation, budget development, feedback on proposal drafts per faculty request, preparation of tables and figures, reference lists, and appendices, and boilerplates); Proposal Submission Support (gathering and completing official University of Florida and federal forms and assurances, signature round-up, and providing liaison services with the Division of Sponsored Research); Budget Management Services (provide Principal Investigators with monthly reports and reconciliations with university financial management software, Peoplesoft©); Faculty Development and Training (coordinate and deliver Faculty Professional Development Series on Proposal Writing, Project Management, Research Design, Quantitative and Qualitative Analyses Procedures, among others); Supporting Collaboration (provide financial support for travel to foundations and funding agencies, seed money for project development); and Communication and Events (Annual Report of accomplishments, OER Monthly Research Bulletin (ORB), and Faculty Brown Bag and Lecture Series).

Personnel Resources
The OER personnel include a Research Director, responsible for coordination and oversight of day-to-day service activities, a Statistics Director who provides statistics and research design consultation services, a Grants Specialist, who provides budget and proposal development support, a Senior Fiscal Assistant who provides budget management services for funded projects, an Executive Secretary, who provides administrative support services to the Associate Dean for Research, the Research Director, and other OER personnel, and a Graduate Research Assistant who provides proposal development support, as assigned.

Funding Activity Levels
Since 2005, OER personnel has provided support services for faculty and doctoral students submitting proposals seeking $133.5 million in research funding with $41.1 million currently awarded.

The Division of Sponsored Research (DSR) was established in 1962 by an act of the Florida Legislature to manage and stimulate an expanding and balanced research program.
