A View from the Disciplines: Modeling C.L.A.S.S. (Character, Leadership, Advocacy, Scholarship and Service) in Research

April 2, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

As a part of Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the University of Florida’s Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society is excited to host its inaugural spring symposium on Monday, April 2, from 12-3pm in the Reitz Union, Grand Ballroom. The theme of the symposium provides the space for faculty and postdoctoral associates of color in various disciplines and levels in their career, to share how they model “C.L.A.S.S.” (character, leadership, advocacy, scholarship and service) in their research. The inauguration of the symposium will be carried out by keynote speaker, Dr. Juan Gilbert, Banks Preeminence Chair in Human-Centered Computing and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department. Dr. Gilbert was the driving force in bringing the Bouchet Society to the University of Florida. Concurrent sessions will be presented by the following selected speakers:

Dr. Paul Ortiz, Center Director & Associate Professor, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (Samuel Proctor Oral History Program & History)

Dr. Muthusami Kumaran, Associate Professor, College of Agricultural & Life Sciences (Nonprofit Management)

Dr. Nicole Ennis, Assistant Professor & Associate Research Director, College of Public Health & Health Professions (Clinical Health & Psychology)

Dr. Vincent Adejumo, Lecturer, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (African-American Studies)

Dr. Jeremy Waisome, Postdoctoral Associate & Project Manager, College of Engineering (Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering)

Concluding the event, will be “Representation Matters: A Conversation with Bouchet Scholars”. This is a panel session that especially undergraduate students interested in research do not want to miss!

All faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students are encouraged to attend.
