The Mathematics Education program in University of Florida’s School of Teaching and Learning offers doctoral degrees in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education. Our faculty are leading scholars and practitioners with the following research focus areas:
Equity-Focused Instruction and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy
Our faculty collaborate with teachers and other educators to address issues of equity and social justice in mathematics education. Graduate students have opportunities to teach K-12 mathematics education courses that support future and current teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse learners (priority given to PhD students).
Mathematical Modeling
Our program values teaching and research that focus on using mathematical concepts and life experiences to solve real-world problems. Graduate students and faculty collaboratively design, teach, and study mathematics curricula that connect mathematics with the values and experiences of learners.
Mathematics Teacher Education & Professional Development
Our faculty specialize in professional learning for teachers at all stages in their career – from aspiring to experienced educators. Graduate students play a key role in our school and teacher partnerships and help us continue to advance research on mathematics teacher education and support teachers in the field.
Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching
Our program offers coursework, supports independent studies, and offers research assistant opportunities related to understanding and advancing the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching at all levels. This work has a particular focus on informing preservice teacher education, professional learning, and education policy.
Leadership and Mathematics Engagement at the State and National Level
Our program is committed to preparing graduates to serve in mathematics education leadership positions at the national, regional, and state levels. We welcome educators committed to advancing mathematics education in a range of roles and contexts, including those interested in advocacy and research to inform policy.
