$750,000 grant boosts UF’s statewide school-improvement network

A statewide, school-improvement partnership between the University of Florida and 14 high-poverty elementary schools—in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Miami-Dade County—has enlisted five more schools in south central Florida in its no-holds-barred crusade to improve student learning and teacher retention at at–risk schools. Expansion of the so-called Florida Flagship Schools network was made possible through a three-year grant worth $750,000 awarded by the Wachovia Foundation to the Lastinger Center for Learning at the UF College of Education.

New dean’s staff aims high as college nears 100th year

As the College of Education approaches its 100th year of preparing teachers, counselors, school administrators and other educators for their life’s work, several new academic leaders and top administrators will be on hand to help lead the college’s efforts to reach the top tier of American education schools. Dean Catherine Emihovich’s new “cabinet” includes a new associate dean for research, two new academic department chairs, and three new directors for programs in graduate studies, informational and instructional technology, and a novel university-schools alliance created to improve educational opportunities for inner-city high school students.

They will discuss recruitment and hiring processes, enculturation of adjunct faculty, professional development, valuing and motivating adjunct faculty, online adjunct training and faculty relationships. Campbell directs the UF-based Community College Leadership Consortium and teaches in the COE’s higher education administration doctoral program.

Alumnus is National Distinguished Principal
Patrick Galatowitsch, a UF alumnus in the Department of Educational Administration and Policy, was recently selected as Florida’s National Distinguished Principal by the Florida Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals. The award, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), recognizes principals’ accomplishments and reinforces their leadership in teaching children. Galatowitsch earned his Ed.S. at UF in 1995 and has been principal of Rolling Hills Elementary for the past nine years. Seven years ago, Rolling Hills was a critically low performing school, but today, it’s an “A” school.

Professors publish book on teacher education reform
Professors Elizabeth Bondy and Dorene Ross are co-editors of the new book, Preparing for Inclusive Teaching: Meeting the Challenges of Teacher Education Reform. The 319-page book, written by UF COE contributors involved in the reform process, is a resource to the challenges and successes of the teacher education reform. It includes descriptions of efforts at UF to unify general and special education in its teacher education program in the mid-1990s and provides strategies and structure for reforming teacher preparation programs. UF education faculty contributors include Alyson Adams, Ellen Amatea, Patricia Ashton, Anne Bishop, Mary Brownell, Vivian Correa, Catherine Emihovich, Zhihui Fang, Sharen Halsall, Holly Lane, James McLeskey, Colleen Swain, Theresa Vernetson and Rodman Webb. COE doctoral students contributing were David Hoppey, Joanna Jennie, Cynthia McCallum, Rhonda Nowak, Gail Ring and Lynee Stafford.

Distance education project cited
Associate Professor Colleen Swain was part of an award-winning distance education project titled Roadmap to Effective Distance Education Instructional Design. The online course won a 2005 American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) Excellence in College and University Distance Education Award. Swain collaborated with UF faculty members from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and from five other universities. She created the curriculum dealing with the teaching aspects of distance teaching and learning. Funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture higher education grant, the online course develops effective materials and innovative approaches in distance education at universities with agricultural academic programs.

Ed tech professor receives national appointments
Education technology specialist Richard Ferdig is the new associate editor of the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, the official journal of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education. Ferdig, an associate professor, has also been elected into the International Digital Media and Arts Association (iDMAa). He and his UF educational technology colleagues have been instrumental in the college’s efforts to develop online education courses at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels. Doctoral student writes “best essay” on library history
Don Boyd, a doctoral education student in social foundations (School of Teaching and Learning), won the 2005 Justin Winsor Prize for the best essay on library history, awarded by the American Library Association. He received the award for, “The Book Women of Kentucky: The WPA Pack Horse Library Project, 1935-1943,” an essay he researched and wrote as an independent study under the supervision of Assistant Professor Sevan Terzian. Boyd received a certificate and cash award recently at the ALA’s Library History Roundtable Conference in Chicago for “telling the story of a neglected part of library history.” His essay is being considered for publication in the ALA’s Libraries and Culture journal. Boyd’s award is particularly noteworthy since the competition drew entries from both graduate students and faculty.
