Being Muslim in America
Please join Housing and Residence Education for a Social Justice dialogue on Being Muslim in America. The event will be held Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 pm in the Yulee Rec Room. This will be an informal dialogue and all are welcome to attend.
Flu Shield Survey
Every year influenza sweeps across the United States. While there are two types of vaccines available to combat influenza, many people choose not to get vaccinated or struggle to find the time or need to do so. The purpose of this study is to identify possible barriers and motivations in relation to influenza vaccination rates among college students. In addition, this study hopes to draw comparisons between the trends of vaccine utilization among University of Florida students as compared to national college students. Finally, the study aims to assess if there is a preferred method of vaccination (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine “Nasal Spray” vs. Inactivated Influenza Vaccine “Shot”).
Your responses to the questions in this survey are very important to us as researchers attempting to increase the vaccination rate at UF. The data collected will be used in the future to increase the number of students vaccinated which will ultimately reduce the number of students who fall ill with the flu. This survey should take no more than 10 minutes of your time and will be completely anonymous.

School-to-Prison Pipeline with American Bar Association President Paulette Brown – March 10th
The “school-to-prison pipeline” refers to policies and practices that push school children, especially at-risk children, out of classrooms and into the criminal justice system. This pipeline reflects the prioritization of incarceration over education. On March 10 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora, ABA President Paulette Brown will explore how inadequate resources, ineffective discipline policies and an increased reliance on law enforcement has resulted in a funneling of students into the juvenile justice system. Introductory remarks with be given by Alachua County School Superintendent Dr. Owen Roberts.
Call for Proposals: Innovative Campus and Community Projects
The Bob Graham Center is seeking proposals for innovative student projects that will strengthen the UF campus, Florida communities, or both. The best proposals will be invited to give a short presentation and the most promising and feasible project proposal will be awarded $5,000 to pursue its implementation. These projects can take many different forms, with a focus on social, economic, educational, health, or political issues, but they must be collaborative, groundbreaking, and promote achievable objectives. Project Learning Tree (PLT) Workshop – March 19th, 8:30am-3:30pm
This year’s spring workshop is at Morningside Nature Center, 3450 E. University Ave. The workshop is open to any forestry, wildlife, agriculture, natural resource, education, recreation, or ANY student interested in learning how to teach youth about the environment.
Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome! Formal and non-formal educators can attend as well. This is a great opportunity to build your resume and learn new skills for teaching youth about environmental issues, become a certified Project Learning Tree Educator, receive a copy of the PLT PreK-8 Guide, and more! Call for Proposals for 2016 College of Education Research Symposium “Fostering Dialogue” – Deadline for Submissions: 11:59pm EST, Thursday, February 25, 2016
All undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and practitioners in the field of education are invited to submit a proposal to the first annual University of Florida College of Education Research Symposium to be held on Thursday, March 31st sponsored by the Education College Council (ECC) and Student Alliance of Graduates in Education (SAGE). Our theme, Fostering Dialogue, is meant to facilitate cross-disciplinary communication and, to that end, we hope the first COE Research Symposium draws interest across the college. As a result, we understand the term “research” broadly and welcome submissions of original social science research, historical inquiry, practitioner inquiry, and other research projects that further our knowledge and understanding of education in a variety of settings, both formal and informal. Faculty members who have worked with undergraduate and graduate students and intern/mentor teacher pairs who have engaged in practitioner inquiry are especially encouraged to submit abstracts. 250-word abstracts may be submitted for presentation as roundtable discussions or poster presentations.

4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps Positions
AmeriCorps is currently looking for members for the 2016-2017 service year, starting August 15th. In our program, AmeriCorps members serve as afterschool instructors, providing hands-on science education programs in agriculture and STEM fields to elementary and middle school students in low-income schools. These positions are great for newly-graduated students who have an interest in teaching, working with youth, low-income communities, or science topics including gardening, animal science, natural resources and engineering. Tutoring/Babysitting/Nannying
We are in need of a responsible young woman to assist with our teenage daughter who is 15 and two dogs. Our dogs are a Labrador Retriever and Australian Shepherd and both are very sweet and playful. Our home is on an acre in SW Gainesville near Haile Plantation about 5-10 minutes west of I-75 off SW Archer Road. The ideal candidates would have their own vehicle and come stay out our house for a weekend or infrequently a week if we are working or attending a conference out of town. Our daughter would need to be dropped at the bus stop at approximately 7:15 A.M. and the house watcher could do whatever they wanted until about 3:15 P.M. On weekends, our daughter is very self-sufficient and will probably want to relax around the house or hangout with friends. For the right person, this could be a very fun job and a nice break from being on campus or in a small apartment. Yoga 4 Youth: Mindful Milestones, Milestones in the Making, Inc
Brianna Schiavoni has a BA in psychology and a Masters in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) working with children managing chronic conditions like AD/HD, anxiety and diabetes. In collaboration with her mother (Ed.S) and Lisa Schiavoni’s longstanding private practice: Milestones in the Making, Inc; Brianna has launched a series of innovative and affordable mental health services programs in Gainesville. Yoga 4 Youth initiatives offer therapeutic yoga as an affordable means to mental health and wellness. Participants enjoy yoga-based activities and games that build skills in a range of areas, including: attention, self-regulation, social skills, motor skills, language & communication, self-esteem & body-image.
In order to maintain low cost, the program is looking for university volunteers to act as behavioral supports during these classes. Volunteers will receive personalized training in behavioral modalities and oversight by a licensed professional. Position expectations range from 3-15 hours per month; and require a commitment of >1 academic semester. Some yoga experience is desirable.
