AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research. The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). This program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. 2020 AAW Madelyn Lockhart Dissertation Fellowship Applications
The Association for Academic Women (AAW) at the University of Florida established the Madelyn Lockhart Fellowship to honor a PhD. Candidate who is both an outstanding researcher and who has contributed to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. One Fellowship in the amount of up to $2,000 will be awarded annually to assist in the dissertation phase of the doctoral degree. The recipient must be enrolled in dissertation credits the semester (or summer) s/he receives the fellowship. This award was established to honor Dr. Madelyn Lockhart, who served as Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of International Studies and Programs at the University of Florida and who aided students in many ways, including implementation of this Fellowship program to assist students working on their dissertations. A nomination can come from a faculty member or from the candidate and the candidate can be from any Ph.D. program. Employment and Internship Opportunities
Undergraduate Research Assistant in Education Policy
Description: The research lab of Dr. Chris Curran (College of Education) is seeking undergraduate students interested in assisting with data collection and other research activities. Dr. Curran’s research focuses on school discipline and safety. The current study examines the impact of questions that ask about prior school disciplinary experiences on college applications. Undergraduate research assistants will have the opportunity to collect archival data to build a national dataset of college applications while also gaining exposure to presenting and discussing research. Undergraduate research assistants will need to be able to commit approximately 8 hours per week to the project. No prior research experience is necessary. There is an opportunity to be paid for the work and, for students who continue in the role and make sufficient contributions, the potential for publication opportunities.

Orchard Positions
Description: Orchard is a fast-growing startup company born from the UF Engineering Innovation Institute that allows seniors to “rent a grandkid” to help them with their technology in their own home. In a sense, we operate off of an Uber-like model, carry out GeekSquad services, while delivering an AARP-like value mission. By 2035, there are going to be 78 million senior citizens in the US, outnumbering children for the first time in US history. Orchard aims to create a new wave of support services for the growing number of the elderly by bringing different generations of people closer together. Backed by angel investors such as ex-Vice President and Technical Fellow of Microsoft, Laura Butler, we are currently refining our operations and getting ready to fundraise for scale-up.

Description: This event will have up to 60 community partners who are ready to give students volunteer and/or internship opportunities. Each community partner will have their own round table with chairs so students can take their time talking one-on-one with them. The community partners will be representing a wide range of social justice causes, from youth development, health care, poverty and homelessness, environmental rights, and women’s empowerment.

Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society Applications

Balance 180 Volunteers
Description: Balance 180 is a local non-profit organization that focuses on integrating children with varying abilities through sports. Our volunteers work 1-1 or 2-1 with our athletes who have disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and cerebral palsy, among others.
- Adaptive Gymnastics Classes: This is a gymnastics class that is specifically designed for children with varying abilities. We set up the gym in rotations that include vault, bars, beam, floor, and tumbletrack, so our athletes can work on a variety of motor skills. The athletes have a range of disabilities including autism, Down syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and cerebral palsy. Information on this program can be found in the flyer below. No gymnastics experience is required to volunteer.
When: Saturdays, 12:30-1:30pm.

Curriculum Designer Volunteer
Description: LYFEhouse is a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of youth and families through personal and professional development. You, our Learning Catalyst, will be our writer of youth development curriculum. Topics will range from essential leadership and life skills. Successful volunteers must have a love for helping youth and young adults develop and unlock their potential. Second, you must be capable of making complex and abstract concepts simple to understand. This project, should you choose to accept it, will involve research and lots of writing to create engaging and versatile instructional materials. This is mostly a virtual appointment, so access to a computer and the internet is a must. Some face to face meetings will be required.
