Association of American Colleges and Universities: Session Proposals

AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research. AAW Madelyn Lockhart Dissertation Fellowship Applications
The Association for Academic Women (AAW) at the University of Florida established the Madelyn Lockhart Fellowship to honor a PhD. Candidate who is both an outstanding researcher and who has contributed to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. This award was established to honor Dr. Madelyn Lockhart, who served as Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of International Studies and Programs at the University of Florida. A nomination can come from a faculty member or from the candidate and the candidate can be from any Ph.D. program. Camp Laurel South Summer Internship
Description: Camp Laurel South is a residential summer camp in Maine seeking college students to be activity instructors and camp counselors for the summer of 2020. Harn Museum of Art Internships
Description: Have you ever wondered what is like to work in an art museum? Harn internships are offered with the goal of providing professional experience, growth opportunities and guidance from museum professionals. Interns have gone on to careers ranging in education at institutions such as Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Kimbell Art Museum and more! Stanford Law School Research Fellow
Commitment: Full-time, starting Summer 2020. Some applicants available to start earlier will also be considered. Fellowships last for one year, with an option to renew for a second year by mutual agreement of the professor and the fellow.
Description: Assist with the research of Professors John J. Donohue, Jacob Goldin, Daniel Ho, Daniel Kessler, and Alison Morantz at Stanford Law School. Designed for graduating seniors or recent college or master’s program graduates, fellowships provide a unique opportunity for those considering graduate school, law school, and/or business school in the future.
Prior Research Fellows have matriculated to Ph.D. programs at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, and NYU and law school at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Columbia. They have been drawn from a variety of undergraduate disciplines, including economics, political science, applied math, public policy, statistics, engineering, and computer science.
Successful applicants will be matched with a specific professor based on background and interests. As full-time Stanford University employees, fellows will receive a competitive salary and benefits package, including full medical and dental insurance, access to campus athletic and academic facilities, paid vacation time, professional development funds, and the capacity to audit Stanford courses and attend on-campus lectures and seminars free of charge.
Job responsibilities will vary by position, but involve all aspects of the research process including:
- Conceptualization of suitable empirical methodologies and models
- Collecting, managing, and structuring quantitative datasets
- Statistical analyses of complex datasets and interpretation of results
- Communication with government officials, industry stakeholders, and research collaborators
- Report writing and manuscript preparation
Job qualifications:
- Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, political science, computer science, statistics, or applied math
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the social sciences or another relevant field
- Outstanding academic credentials and intellectual creativity
- Eagerness to take initiative and solve intricate problems
- Excellent time-management skills and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Exceptional research and analytical writing skills
- Programming experience in R, Python, Stata, SAS, or other languages is strongly preferred
- Prior research experience and coursework in the empirical social sciences is preferred, but not required

Undergraduate Research Assistant in Education Policy
Description: The research lab of Dr. Chris Curran (College of Education) is seeking undergraduate students interested in assisting with data collection and other research activities. Dr. Curran’s research focuses on school discipline and safety. The current study examines the impact of questions that ask about prior school disciplinary experiences on college applications. Undergraduate research assistants will have the opportunity to collect archival data to build a national dataset of college applications while also gaining exposure to presenting and discussing research. Undergraduate research assistants will need to be able to commit approximately 8 hours per week to the project. No prior research experience is necessary. There is an opportunity to be paid for the work and, for students who continue in the role and make sufficient contributions, the potential for publication opportunities.

Orchard Positions
Description: Orchard is a fast-growing startup company born from the UF Engineering Innovation Institute that allows seniors to “rent a grandkid” to help them with their technology in their own home. In a sense, we operate off of an Uber-like model, carry out GeekSquad services, while delivering an AARP-like value mission. By 2035, there are going to be 78 million senior citizens in the US, outnumbering children for the first time in US history. Orchard aims to create a new wave of support services for the growing number of the elderly by bringing different generations of people closer together. Backed by angel investors such as ex-Vice President and Technical Fellow of Microsoft, Laura Butler, we are currently refining our operations and getting ready to fundraise for scale-up.

Description: First Year Florida will be hosting information sessions on October 10th for interested Peer Leader applicants. First Year Florida is a course designed to aid students in a successful transition to the University of Florida by connecting students to campus, promoting engagement within and outside the classroom, and communicating university expectations. The First Year Florida Peer Leader Program will provide students the ability to serve as a facilitator, resource, role model, and representative of UF.

SAILE Leadership Opportunity
Description: The Student Activities and Involvement Leadership Experience program or SAILE is a 6-week selective leadership series for current student leaders at the University of Florida. Participants will be challenged to enhance their current positional leadership style and grow in their identity as a leader on campus.
Participants in SAILE will:
- Maximize current leadership style
- Gain strategies for effective delegation
- Examine the dynamic between leader and follower
- Increase facilitation of group dynamics
- Aid in organizational sustainability
- Help organizations solve complex challenges
Sessions are led by faculty, staff, and community facilitators with a strong emphasis on dialogue, interaction between participants, activities, and reflection.

Description: Gator alumni family seeking a person that is good with children for after school childcare for a 7 year old boy with ADHD. We would like someone with a fun, lighthearted, energetic personality who enjoys engaging with an active, intelligent, curious little guy. You’ll need your own transportation to get to our home in the Duckpond area of Gainesville, near Tom Petty Park. Any particular skills such as music, art, sports, and a love of nature would be great. There’s a creek nearby full of minnows and crawfish! Must be patient and kind. We ask that phone use is limited to emergencies, and no tv or video games during that time.
When: 3 afternoons per week (after school), 4:00-6:30
