Submit a Proposal! College of Education Research Symposium
The 2021 University of Florida College of Education Research Symposium, “Better Together: Collaborating for Progress,” is coming up! This all-day virtual event on Thursday, 3/4, hosted by the UF College of Education, Education College Council, and Student Alliance of Graduates in Education will provide an inviting environment for students, practitioners, faculty, and more to get together, share their work, and discuss pressing topics in education.
We are inviting all undergraduate students, graduate students, teachers, and practitioners to submit a proposal to present at the symposium. If you are not submitting a proposal, save the date and and join us virtually on 3/4 to hear about the exciting work being done and engage in important discussions in education.

Working in Our Nation’s Capital: Careers In Government
Description: Working in Our Nation’s Capital is a new career development program to introduce students to a variety of opportunities available in federal government. The event on Monday, Feb. 22 includes three panels comprised of individuals who work on Capitol Hill, at political organizations and as student interns in Washington, D.C.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mentors
Description: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illnesses and their families.
NAMI Gainesville is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education, support, and advocacy with the goal to empower individuals living with mental illness and their families, and to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. Elimination of the stigma attached to mental illness is essential to achieve the goals of empowerment, social inclusion, and recovery. These are paid positions that involve 5-10 hours per month.

Otis Hawkins Center Assistant Learning Specialist
Description: The Otis Hawkins Center is currently hiring for two Assistant Learning Specialist Positions! This paid two-year internship is intended to provide a practical, hands-on experience in the area of Learning Services Support for Student-Athletes while pursuing a graduate degree at University of Florida. The Learning Services Program provides academic support and assistance for at-risk student-athletes at the University of Florida. The intern will: work with student-athletes with learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD; orient new student-athletes to the Disability Resource Center’s programs; assist in screening evaluations and referrals for assessment of learning disabilities; offer learning strategies; and refer students to appropriate campus resources.

Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Caruth Summer Camp
Description: The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Caruth Camp in Levy County [about 45 minutes southwest of Gainesville] is a non-profit overnight summer camp program for youth that is available at no cost to families. Our program offers traditional summer camp activities while promoting positive relationships with adults and law enforcement officers. Currently we are seeking qualified candidates to fill our Group Leader positions for the 2021 season. Our Group Leaders are the most vital aspect of the camping program because they have constant interaction with the campers. Group Leader duties involve; the continuous leadership, guidance and supervision of campers, participation in the planned camp program and serving as the major initiator of group activities. Working at summer camp is a wonderful opportunity to build your resume while cultivating valuable classroom management and real-world job skills.
When: The positon is seasonal (May 27-August 13)

Gainesville Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) Volunteers
Description: The ICO is a program created by the Sierra Club in the 1970s to promote outdoor experiences to youth from communities with limited access to connect and reconnect to the outdoors. Major cities in the USA have an ICO program. These ICO programs will help create the next generation of environmental justice leaders by increasing their exposure to outdoor recreation. This follows the Sierra Club motto or “Explore, Enjoy and Protect”.
Gainesville ICO: The Gainesville ICO was created in 2010 to promote outings with several groups of youth in East Gainesville. We have done hikes at Ring Park, and Prairie Creek Preserve, canoeing along the Santa Fe River, camping trips at Payne’s Prairie and O’Leno State Park. At this time, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping with these outings and possibly getting trained to be outings leaders.
