STUDENT TEACHING APPLICATION DEADLINE SPRING 2015
DUE TODAY
If you are completing a Secondary full-time internship in the Spring 2015 term applications are due by Wednesday, October 1st. Please submit signed applications to Student Services, G416 Norman Hall by 5:00 PM on the due date.

 SAGE Workshop:  Coursework to Quals to Prospectus with Dr. Nancy Waldron – Thursday  October 2nd at 12:30 in the Terrace Room

Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies Presents – John Forster
The Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies (CEECS) invites you to join us for a presentation to be given by John Forster on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Norman Hall Terrace Room. John is the Chief Executive Officer of Noah’s Ark, located in Victoria, Australia. In addition to serving as CEO for Noah’s Ark, he has led systems-level efforts in Victoria and throughout Australia to foster early childhood inclusion. The title of his presentation is Australian Perspectives on Early Childhood Inclusion: From Promise to Practice.

 Holographic 3D, zSpace demonstration

 Fall 2014 Career Showcase
The Career Resource Center would like to invite youand your students to our Fall Career Showcase on September 30th and October 1st , 2014 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the O’Connell Center. This event is open to students and alumni only and we would love to see you and your students there! It is a two-day event featuring more than 350 employers to network with our UF candidates. The first day is Non-Technical Day (i.e. Accounting, Sales, Retail, Communications, and more) and the second day is Technical Day (i.e. Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, etc.).

Project Makeover Project Captain Applications
Project Makeover is a student-run organization dedicated to creating a more dynamic learning environment for elementary school students in Alachua County. We are looking for students (esp. first and second year) to serve as Project Captains to help facilitate volunteer projects such as painting murals, landscaping, and a special dream project. FOOD DRIVE to support Hispanic Children in Alachua
We are volunteers of Alachua Children Literacy Project. We are organizing a food drive to benefit Hispanic, low income immigrant children in Alachua, FL. We hope the children are not hungry when they come to the literacy project.  MISS THE STUDY ABROAD FAIR?
No problem!  Here are two 2015 Study Abroad options for Education (and other) majors:

  • UF IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC–undergraduate students This 6-week, Study Abroad option includes the opportunity to teach in community learning centers in Santiago, Dominican Republic.  Students take 3 credit hours of either accelerated Spanish OR 3 credits of Cultura Dominicana (en espanol) PLUS 3 credits of EDG4930, Teaching in the Dominican Republic.  Students  live in homestays with families.  Contact Dr. Maria Coady (mcoady@coe.ufl.edu) for more information.
  • UF IN FINLAND**–graduate students – Ever wonder why the Finnish education system is considered to be “the best in the world?” Find out in Helsinki, Finland in a 2-week, 3 credit hour Study Abroad program, May 3-17, 2014. Students will work with educators from the University of Helsinki, meet public school teachers (primary and secondary), observe classrooms, and engage in cultural events.  For additional information, contact  Dr. Maria Coady at mcoady@coe.ufl.edu

**NOTE: this separate Finland Study Abroad option builds upon Spring 2015 graduate seminar EDF 6812:  International and Comparative Education with Dr. Coady, Wednesdays, periods 10-E1.   Though not required to participate in the Study Abroad, students are encouraged to participate in both.

Part-time teaching opportunities at a local Charter School
A local charter school (boulwarecharter.com) is seeking students who are interested in getting experience working with elementary school children in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment. We are looking for students to come teach Specials classes on either Mondays or Wednesdays from 9:45-2:45 with a 30 min break for lunch. Students will either lead arts/crafts or music (we have a piano) or another Special that they are qualified to teach. The pay is $15/hr. and the position will begin the week of Oct 6th and end the week of Dec 15th, with the possibility for renewal in the next term. Supplies are provided.  RA/RCA Applications Available for Spring & Fall 2015!
The Department of Housing and Residence Education is currently seeking applicants for the position of Resident Assistant/Residential College Advisor for Spring 2015 and the 2015-2016 academic year. RAs/RCAs serve as advisers to residents, build a community for their residents, enforce policies and regulations, exercise good judgment in possible crisis situations and are role models. Our staff members gain a sense of accomplishment, pride, self-worth and receive personal and professional growth opportunities. Some requirements include: have lived on campus at least 1 semester (including this current semester), be in good academic/disciplinary standing and have a 2.5 cumulative UF GPA.  GAINESVILLE HIPPY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
GAINESVILLE HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters; http://www.gainesvillehippy.org/) SEEKS VOLUNTEERS to work closely with children and families during monthly meetings that are held throughout the community. Student Employment Opportunity
Seeking 1 to 2 people to conduct duties related to an early intervention research study. Duties include data collection, data organization and entry, and video processing and coding. Experience with early childhood intervention programs and/or early childhood home visiting services desired. Ideal candidate(s) will have :

  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills,
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions,
  • Ability to operate hand held video equipment and process video using various software

Some travel within Alachua County area may be required.  Either one 20-hour/week position or two 10-hour/week positions will be considered. Compensation will depend on experience. One Heart Source is currently accepting applications for our 2015 Volunteer Programs in South Africa. Join Florida Alternative Breaks this 2014-2015 school year as one of our site leaders!
Site leading is an incredibly rewarding commitment. All of our trips will give CoE students the chance to host educational activities with their participants on the social issue and also lead discussions on the issues in relation to their service.

No leadership experience? Or maybe you’re a little rusty? We got you.  To become a site leader, you will be enrolled in a 2 credit course along with your co-site leader where you will receive a thorough training on leading through service-learning. You will get tons of support from the Exec Board as well as your site leader trainers. This course will also pay for your trip (except international trips). And let’s be real, site leading just takes FAB trips to a whole new level of fun and engagement.  Projects for Haiti (P4H)
We believe that passionate individuals can inspire local and global change!  We, Projects for Haiti (P4H), are a Gainesville- based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to partner with Haitians educationally and vocationally while collaborating with the international community to advocate for global sustainable practices. We are thrilled to announce that on November 1st, 2014 we will be bringing together over 100 Educators from around North Central Florida to host the First Annual Gainesville Connected Conference. In collaboration with the University of Florida Centers for Latin American, African, and European Studies, we hope to use the stories and passions of prominent international educational leaders to raise global awareness of global issues across world regions in our community.  This event will feature 5-6 dynamic speakers that will seek to inspire further international partnerships among educators and encourage global citizenry in North Central Florida classrooms. UF Volunteers Needed to Math Tutor for Underprivileged Teenage Girls
Growing up, many of the teenage girls here at our wonderful alternative school have either:  not been provided with the educational resources to help them succeed or been in such painful or challenging life circumstances that learning math concepts has taken a back burner.  As a UF student, you could really make a difference, explaining how to figure out middle and high school math problems (pre-algebra, algebra and geometry), and encouraging our girls’ determination.  The experience of seeing their light bulb go on about something that was previously confusing can be deeply rewarding.  Also, in addition to the intrinsic benefits, volunteering for the PACE Center for Believing in Girls, looks great on your resume!  Furthermore, there is books and internet resources here that can help you help them! If you are available to commit to focusing with our adolescents on 6-12 grade math material, volunteering on a consistent weekly schedule for a minimum of 3 hours a week – on Monday, Thursday and/or Friday between the hours of 9:45 am-4 pm.  For the first 5 people who contact us, we would pay for the $27 DJJ background screen required to be able to work to our vulnerable population.  Please respond to emi.lenes@pacecenter.org.

Environmental Education Workshop Opportunity
Attached is a flyer with information regarding an upcoming Project Learning Tree workshop taking place on Oct 4, 2014 from 8:30-3:00 at Austin Cary Forest Learning Center in Gainesville. This is a great opportunity for any education, forestry, wildlife, agriculture, natural resource, or other student interested in learning how to teach youth about the environment. PLT provides formal, non-formal, and pre-service educators with the resources and curriculum to teach environmental education to youth through activities and lessons integrated through other subjects.  The workshop is only $5.
